Nov 25, 2013

Ying Wang wrote:

SGI Amphitheater Technology Center Nov 26, 2013

Exterior view of Silicon Graphics Inc. headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003. Troubled computer maker Silicon Graphics Inc. said Wednesday it is cutting another 600 jobs, or nearly 17 percent of its work force, in its latest effort to keep costs in line with sagging revenues. Including 400 layoffs announced in May, SGI will have reduced its total headcount by 25 percent, to 3,000, when the latest round is completed over the next several months. http://www.studios.com/projects/google_headquarters_formerly_sgi_north_charleston_campus

Originally designed for Silicon Graphics, Inc., this campus now houses Google’s headquarters.

STUDIOS designed this campus—which previously housed SGI’s corporate headquarters, as well as research and development facilities—to reflect the technology company’s progressive culture and business philosophy. The campus’ four buildings are configured to create internal courtyards, and are connected to one another by glass bridges. The project included office space for engineering and administrative staff, dining facilities, a fitness center, a theater, and a 1,000 car parking structure.

The campus is located near a former Superfund site a short distance from San Francisco Bay. Developed in public-private partnership with the City of Mountain View, the site includes public access trails through its center, as well as an adjacent public park.

The North Charleston Campus is a benchmark for corporate campus design—through the application of urban and academic campus design concepts, this project transformed the notion of the suburban corporate campus.

Yueyin,

That's indeed one of the most impressive hi-tech company campuses. It used to be the crown jewel of Silicon Graphics(SGI) until they unfortunately hit on hard times. At one time I held a whole bunch of SGI shares. Thank God I got out before they filed for Chapter 11.

I think the multicolor scheme of Google's interior decor and furniture was inspired to some degree by the legacy of SGI too.

Indeed. Even Steve Jobs was hesitant to take over the mess Gil Amelio left him. He stayed interim CEO for multiple years until 2000.

In its heyday, SGI bought out Cray Research. But the corporate culture of the two companies never meshed. Eventually Cray was sold off for a song.
