I was wondering if anybody has experience in cashing a US pay check in Japan. Do you have to pay some fees to the banks? I have called some banks in Tokyo and so far none of them had any idea.
Any input will be much appreciated.

Well, many years ago I tried to cash a USA check (a small amount, about 30 US dollars or so), but was told at the bank the fee would be almost as much as the amount in the check itself. I was recommended by the teller not to cash it in Japan, but to do it in the USA whenever I went there again, which I did.
I recommend you ask at banks that offer foreign currency services, like the Citibank or The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.
Hope this helps.

I haven't tried but... Feb 20, 2006

I haven't tried but I have searched about check payment in Japan so far. I think using Get2Cash and withdrawing into JapanNetBank(one of the biggest online bank in Japan) is the fastest and the most cost-effective way:

US check Feb 20, 2006

Yes , we have cashed US check in our Japan Bank many times. For actual deposit period is one month and bank charges for that is around 2500 yen.
You have to submit a form in your Japan Bank for check deposit.
