Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy’s vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. Especially at stake is one little girl’s belief in Santa. In a dramatic decision, the court confirms Kris as the true Santa, allowing Susan and countless other children to experience the joy of childhood fantasy.

至于“上海-爱丁堡”的梗, 以及上面回帖的 “Connotation” 是显而易见的。

Thanks for this and for your sense of humour which I actually enjoyed from your first post. Back to the term "shanghai", "Oxford's Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary" says it's "Old-fashioned, informal" to mean "to trick or force sb into doing sth. that they do not really want to do 诓骗，強迫。
I think as news about growing Covid infections in the city of Shanghai and other major cities of China, it's a case of 旧词新用. It isn't "out of date" but old fashioned.
Merriam Webster Dictionary has this interesting trace of origin of the word as follows:
"In the 1800s, long sea voyages were very difficult and dangerous, so people were understandably hesitant to become sailors. But sea captains and shipping companies needed crews to sail their ships, so they gathered sailors any way they could—even if that meant resorting to kidnapping by physical force or with the help of liquor or drugs. The word shanghai comes from the name of the Chinese city of Shanghai. People started to use the city's name for that unscrupulous way of obtaining sailors because the East was often a destination of ships that had kidnapped men onboard as crew."
It came from the Ching Dynasty era 淸朝时代 吧。 Historical. I think after the pandemic is gone, people will forget about it and the term will not be as popular as now.
