Sloan Rules: Alfred P. Sloan and the Triumph of General Motors 《斯隆规则:通用汽车塑造轨迹》 http://product.china-pub.com/812566 我觉得这里的Rules不是复数形式的名词,而是单数形式的不及物动词,rule作不及物动词用,意为起支配作用,居首要地位。

wherestip United States Local time: 00:53 Chinese to English + ... The free enterprise model | Jan 8, 2014 |
I copied a section from the prologue of this book. I think the title refers to the fact that the free enterprise model that Sloan helped shape still firmly rules American society to this day. In the 1930s, with the economy in crisis and political forces - New Dealers - arguing that businessmen cannot be trusted to produce prosperity or economic justice, Sloan rushes to the defense of his free enterprise model, in which industrial leaders, not government officials, must be free to manage their business as they see fit. World War ii, Sloan believes, vindicates his social vision. General Motors and other key industries, not politicians and bureaucrats, produced America's "arsenal of democracy" and, so, victory. When Sloan finally steps down from his executive duties at General Motors in1946, he does so confidently that the free enterprise system he helped build and has long championed has regained its primacy in American life. During the last years of his life, Sloan spends hundreds of millions of dollars to strengthen his version of a well-ordered American society. Alfred Sloan was a business genius and a great corporate manager. He thought little about social justice or morality. Sloan, as he would be the first to state, did not act alone at General Motors nor in his political work. This book is a biographical study but it is also an assessment of one aspect of American conservatism. Historians, after focusing for many years primarily on liberal politicians and leftist social change movements, have begun to reckon with the power of conservative forces and ideas in American history. ...
IMO, to translate rules into 规则 might be a little too narrow. However, I do agree with Phil that the the word "rules" in the title could very well have a double meaning.
“斯隆規則” sounds weird, though | Jan 8, 2014 |

Here's the 9 chapters of the book. The title of the 9th chapter also doubles as part of the title of the book. The word "rules" looks very much like a verb to me. IMO, it basically means Sloan's ideology proved to be triumphant. Prologue 1 Sloan's Work 2 Sloan the Executive 3 Sloan Navigates a New Course 4 Sloan in Control 5 Sloan Enters Society 6 Mr. Sloan Goes to Washington 7 Sloan and the New Deal 8 Sloan at War 9 Sloan Rules

Here's another section from the prologue ... Sloan had never shirked his corporate duties. When economic and political crisis threatened General Motors during what he perceived to be the dark years of the New Deal, Sloan did everything in his power to preserve the corporation's freedom to act and its right to profitability. To manage General Motors' political crisis, Sloan had to think about the public and attempt to act on the democratic citizenry in ways he had never before imagined. He had been forced to stretch intellectually and to expand his interests in novel ways. Alfred Sloan was a private man who believed the nation's good came from the private enterprise system. During his long tenure as a leader of America's greatest industrial enterprise, Sloan devoted himself to corporate profit. Private profit, he believed, created national prosperity. That national prosperity, he knew with great certainty, was the foundation on which everything else that Americans chose to value was built. Democracy, equality, liberty, and the other shibboleths of politicians and public-minded figures of one kind or another, he knew, even if they did not, depended on the economic productivity created by men like him. Alfred Sloan knew that much and he lived his life based on that knowledge. He acted on those beliefs. His America would be built on those sequential truths. We live and still wrestle with Alfred Sloan's truths.
