Not at all! Since the pandemic work has been more irregular than ever. For instance, in July I had almost no work and in August I was flooded with work the whole month. September is looking good, too. All in all, things look pretty alive… | | | expressisverbis Portugal Local time: 06:26 Member (2015) English to Portuguese + ...

Kind regards, Levan I am alive and kicking, and so translation business. About renewing your ProZ membership, only you can decide it. I came across this article: "Now, a team of archaeologists and computer scientists from Israel has created an AI-powered translation program for ancient Akkadian cuneiform, allowing tens of thousands of already digitized tablets to be translated into English instantaneously. 17 jun 2023" If AI is able to 'crack' cuneiform script, how difficult would it be to translate modern languages? Don't make yourself any illusions, its just a matter of time. | | | Lieven Malaise Belgium Local time: 07:26 Member (2020) French to Dutch + ...

What makes you think that it is AI that has done the 'cracking' ? If you use DeepL, then it is not DeepL that has done the initial translation, but the zillion existing documents and pages that it has been fed with, followed by human intervention to eleminate obvious errors and to learn the machine how to establish better connexions. | | | Lieven Malaise Belgium Local time: 07:26 Member (2020) French to Dutch + ...
I looked the article up. One of the first sentences : "Accuracy is debatable." 🤣 | |

I have found this article about the subject too: "The goal of an NMT system for Akkadian is to be part of a human–machine collaboration, by creating a pipeline that assists the scholar or student of the ancient language. These functionalities are especially aimed at analyzing cuneiform texts with computational methods." https://academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/article/2/5/pgad096/7147349 I can't imagine machines working all alone and killing our profession. Also, there is an Akkadian/French/English online dictionary. Pretty interesting: https://www.assyrianlanguages.org/akkadian/index_en.php As someone who has always been fascinated by ancient languages, I think I'm going to play around with this dictionary as soon as I find some time. ▲ Collapse | | | Machine translation | Sep 8, 2023 |

The origin of the name is unknown, but today it has some justification... because stolen goods are turning up there; this would not be the reason for the origin of its name, since it started in 1272 by selling the traditional products of a market, and only in the end of the 19th century has it moved into the vintage business. Some researchers, especially specialists in Arab culture, suggest that the origin of the name may be related to the existence of a statue of Mary, "Al Hadra" ("the virgin"), in Arabic. ▲ Collapse | | | texjax DDS PhD Local time: 01:26 Member (2006) English to Italian + ...
