Translation - English Anya Izotova Received MOTOmed trainer
Diagnosis: Infantile cerebral paralysis (ICP), spastic diplegia (Erb-Charcot disease). Psychomotor retardation. Permanent disability.
Anya was a severely premature baby weighing only 950 grams (just over 2 pounds) at birth. At one year of age she was diagnosed with ICP. Her parents brought her to rehabilitation programs in government-funded and private hospitals. Each round of treatment brought some new improvements.
In 2010, the girl underwent double leg surgery at the Research Children’s Orthopedic Institute G.I. Turnera (Saint Petersburg, Russia). The surgery, paid for with government funds, helped reduce some of the muscle tension in Anya’s legs. The girl was able to stand on her entire foot, whereas previously she could only stand on the tips of her toes. However, her muscles were weakened from wearing a cast on each of her legs. At this time Anya is in need of a continuous rehabilitation.
According to doctors’ recommendations, Anya needs a technical rehabilitation trainer tool, MOTOmed Viva1, for permanent daily use in order to prevent joint deformities and avoid possible problems with her limbs. The trainer automatically predicts bouts of muscle stiffness and helps release the spasticity. MOTOmed also helps to: work on immobilized legs and arms; normalize blood flow; improve walking skills and the psychoemotional state; reduce dependency on someone else’s assistance; and reduce negative consequences of low mobility etc.
The cost of regular rehabilitation courses and other means of support is too high for Anya’s family. The family lives in a small rural town. The girl’s father gets a tiny salary, and her mother has to stay home to look after Anya full-time. Their older daughter, Katya, is a college student and also needs their support.
Our fund has paid the bill for the MOTOmed Viva1 trainer, priced at 314 072 roubles (approx. $10,469 USD). 270 000 roubles of this amount were raised at the Musical Charity Marathon that was held on November 8, 2012 at The International School of Moscow. Another 44 072 roubles were raised though donation boxes at BP gas stations.
Thanks to everyone who has helped us raise the funds for the MOTOmed Viva1 rehabilitation trainer for Anya! Your support is very important! Thank you for your kind, open hearts!

Source text - English CC: Do you make a distinction between charity and philanthropy?
MM: Over time charity has come to mean the side of the philanthropic universe that is about relieving suffering. Charity is a good broad term but it has a lot of historical baggage. It carries this notion of paternalism and judgmental friendly visiting by Victorian ladies. It has a strong negative connotation of people not wanting charity; there’s an implication that the receiver is supplicant and can’t take care of themselves and suggests the giver has power over them. I don’t know that it deserves all those connotations, and charity is still something we want to encourage in people. But as a term it has enough of that baggage to be less useful than philanthropy as a broad term. In the book we talk about the common distinction between two general purposes: charity as alleviating suffering and philanthropy as improving the quality of life by developing systems. You can generally fit everything we do into those two boxes, but ideally we would want philanthropy to encompass both.
Translation - Russian
