English term

to mediate or gateway between (meaning of sentence)

English Tech/Engineering Computers: Systems, Networks
server - talking about infrastracture simplification in data centers

the problem sentence is towards the end, I am copying a big portion of text to help you understand

"Let’s quickly walk through our data center to understand it a bit better
This example shows a myriad of computers running multiple operating systems that might be necessary to meet the needs of a single business process.
Computing is a distributed environment today with a mixture of mainframe and distributed servers.
There’s the mainframe, typically managed by the IT department. The mainframe is relegated to its traditional online transaction processing and database serving capabilities. There’s the multitude of Intel and RISC type servers associated with the various applications sponsored by individual Business Unit Executive initiatives. Intel and RISC servers are deployed to individually meet the processing needs of specific tasks. In this diagram, the horizontal row of servers each can depict a uni-dimensional function, though the function could actually be achieved by a cluster of servers working together to meet business demands. ***Where interoperability is required, additional servers may be placed in a “no man’s land” between server farms to mediate or gateway between the server managed organizations.***

if interoperability is needed, one solution is to place additional servers in this no man's land (? I know the meaning of this expression but what does it mean here?) to provide a connection between server-managed organizations???

can you help me understand this sentence? what's the purpose of it??

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com May 4, 2004:
maybe I made some confusion the second sentence which starts with "if interoperability" is my attempt at rephrasing the previous original sentence, the one between asterisks, which I the one I am asking you to explain... thanks!
(also I don't think no mans's land is a point on the diagram also because of the reference to server farms... - my main concern however is with teh meaning of "mediate or gateway between"

The concept of "interoperability", simplistically put, means - the conversion of data, by the sending entity, into a format that the receiving entity can understand.

Since the scenario the text is referring to is multi-operating system + multi - CPU architectures, there very obviously arises the need for this conversion to be carried out by some "third" party - or as the writer puts it - a party sitting in the no-man's land. This third party carries out the actual conversion process. Thus, it acts as a mediator / gateway between two servers, who otherwise are strangers to each other.

I think that "no man's land" is just a reference to a blank space on the diagram that they mention. Interoperability means operations between servers, so in simple terms they are linked.

disagree Craft.Content : "interoperability", in the computing field, is the process of "converting data in a format that a receiving entity understands".
