I have been hired to translate pages on wordpress. Can you explain to me how to start translating a page in English?

The client should have specified the method you need to use for that purpose.
Do you have to simply translate, or also create the translated pages in WP?
There are (free or paid) plugins that allow you to do both (simply search for "wordpress translation plugins").
I would ask the client about how they want to handle this.
