ATA Certification Exam
Sep 24, 2011
Do you think there is a chance that the ATA will ever start offering the certification tests at national test-taking centers (such as Kaplan, ACT centers) so that it can be taken anywhere and at anytime?

The problem is that availability of administration "anywhere and anytime" would require the generation of dozens upon dozens of reading passages to be used in the testing for each language pair in which ATA offers certification. This in order to ensure, for example, that Examinee A who takes the Spanish-to-English test in Detroit does not pass the word to his friend scheduled to take the same test the next day about the nature and content of the reading passages.

My general impression is that the reading passages used in these exams are fairly carefully vetted so that they are not "too easy," "too difficult," or "too ambiguous." The organization seems to run on a shoestring budget, and paying qualified translators to carefully review and approve passages for each of the language pairs (or, alternatively, outsourcing such work) would seem prohibitively expensive (and I doubt that there are armies of volunteers standing by who would be happy to assume such a task without receiving compensation).
I did not have a clue about this. Perfect. Good idea, although the font in the seal is a bit small and it is hard to read unless you really print a big seal. I have added it to my Proz.com profile and my CV. Looks good!
