I find the proz forum very interesting and informative and wonder how cooperative and friendly the participants of this forum. I feel like it is my family and feel proud to a user ( I am not a member yet) of this site. I am involved in the field of this translation for many years but was not aware of this site may be for my poor knowledge in IT.
Anyway, now proz became part of my life and whenever I sit in front of the computer, I log on to proz. I see some common faces and names a... See more I find the proz forum very interesting and informative and wonder how cooperative and friendly the participants of this forum. I feel like it is my family and feel proud to a user ( I am not a member yet) of this site. I am involved in the field of this translation for many years but was not aware of this site may be for my poor knowledge in IT.
Anyway, now proz became part of my life and whenever I sit in front of the computer, I log on to proz. I see some common faces and names around the world who always participate in discussion. Right the moment I remember Heinrich Pesch from Finland, Henry Hinds from United States, Ritu from Delhi, India, Balasubramaniam from India and Branka Stankovic McCarthy from Serbia and Montenegro. (Please do not mind if your name is not mentioned although you participate more frequently)
But I wonder why Bengali language professionals do not frequently take part in the forum discussion. I even see that very few Bengali language professionals ask kudo.z questions. You see there is no question in my language pairs in the last at least 15 days. I have already asked three questions in two months and got very good and encourging answars but seeing no questions from experienced members, I am feeling does asking question reduce your competency as translator?!
My write-up is only for curiosity, not to hurt anybody's feeling so if any one feels hurt, I am sorry to him.

There may not be many Bengali translators listed on proz.com (though I haven't checked this).
I suggest you organize a powpow in your area to let more Bengali translators in your area know about this site. This will also help you build a network of good translators which could help you when you move up the value chain and start outsourcing work.

Thank you for reply but you may not know that there are 190 freelance Bengali translators currently registered with proz apart from another around two hundred agencies that offer BengaliEnglish translation services. And the number of jobs posted at proz is not negligeable amount. But you see there is even no responce from Bengali translators except one although the topic is related with them. Well you cannot force somebody to talk if one wants to remain silent!

No Bala. I have already use Arial Unicode for Hindi in Windows98 platform.

As a mejor language of India and the national language of Bangladesh (whose population is over 10 crores),Bengali is gaining more and more importance in translation world. Many IT professionals in India and Bangladesh work to develop Bengali word processor and fonts.They also develop unicode fonts like "Vrinda". The interesting fact is I have used Arial Unicode font to write Bengali (which I use to write Hindi) although there is lack of few words to write properly.

Hi Keshab,
Arial Unicode MS is a complete Unicode font which means that it has the symbols of all languages in the world. If you look at the size of the font file, you will see that it is close to 20MB.
I regularly use it for typing in Hindi, Malayalam, Gujarati and Tamil.

Here are some comparative statistics of registered translators (only freelancers, not agencies) in proz for other language pairs:
English Hindi: 719
English Chinese: 3348
English Arabic: 2760
English Spanish: 17723
English to French: 9023
So I would call 160 a sub-critical number, especially since not many of these 160 are likely to be active. On a rough estimate, only about 10 per cent of all the listed translator on proz are active at any moment of time.

Because, the people of this subcontinent study ENGLISH as the 1st or 2nd language. they give very importance to 'learning English' to be "educated". They don't need translation.
