Abstract
Using the theories proposed within symbolic interactionism, and concentrating on Erving Goffman’s work on the creation and presentation of the “self,” we explore how the killings of Jeffrey Dahmer and Dennis Andrew Nilsen were engaged in as part of a process of the killer seeking to become something or someone else. The killings, which resulted in corpses that each man kept with him for a certain length of time, didn’t just satisfy an immediate blood-lust in the two men, the killings, and the bodies of the dead men, facilitated an imagined personal change from the men being shy and socially awkward to being romantically and sexually accepted by other men (in the form of corpses) in a longer-term relationship.

Resumen
En el presente trabajo exploraremos cómo las matanzas llevadas a cabo por Jeffrey Dahmer y Dennis Andrew Nilsen fueron parte de un proceso de búsqueda para convertirse en algo o alguien más. Para ello se utilizarán las teorías propuestas dentro del interaccionismo simbólico, en especial, el trabajo realizado por Irving Goffman sobre la creación y la presentación de la “persona” . Las matanzas y, como resultado, los cadáveres que cada asesino mantuvo consigo por un cierto período de tiempo no solo satisficieron un deseo inmediato de sangre, sino que facilitaron en ellos un cambio personal imaginario ya que, de ser hombres tímidos y torpes en su vida social, pasaban a ser aceptados romántica y sexualmente por otros hombres (cadáveres) en una relación más duradera.

El derecho, por lo general, se muestra reticente a aceptar la ayuda de la psicología; sin embargo, con frecuencia, resulta atraído por el conocimiento de esta disciplina y acude a ella para determinar si un testigo o indagado dice la verdad. Lamentablemente, existe el mito de que las estrategias que los psicólogos utilizamos para conocer en profundidad a las personas son mágicas cuando, en realidad, lo que hacemos es una observación sistemática para determinar los indicadores conductuales, lingüísticos y fisiológicos de la verdad. La presente digresión explorará estas estrategias. Se hará una descripción crítica del polígrafo, comúnmente denominado detector de mentiras; la hipnosis; el análisis de contenido basado en criterios; los indicadores conductuales de la mentira; el análisis del estrés de la voz y las entrevistas asistidas con drogas.
Translation - English When is an interrogee or a witness telling the truth?
In general, the Law is reluctant to accept the help of Psychology. Nevertheless, the former frequently becomes interested in the knowledge this discipline offers and turns to it to determine whether an interrogee or a witness is telling the truth or not. Unfortunately, there is a myth that the strategies psychologists use to know people in depth are magic when, in fact, what we do is a systematic observation to determine the behavioral, linguistic and physiological cues to the truth. This digression will explore the strategies. It will be carried out a critical description of the polygraph, generally referred to as lie detector; the hypnosis; the Criterion-based Content Analysis; the Behavioral Cues to Deception; the Voice Stress Analysis; and the drug-assisted interviews.
