Dip Trans question: second semi-specialised paper Thread poster: Pratik Bhattacharya

Looking at the Dip Trans exam structure,
- Paper 2 is to be chosen from: Technology, Business or Literature.
- Paper 3 to be chosen from Science, Social Science or Law.
I intend to specialise in DE-EN Financial Services translation, so I can take Business for Paper 2. But I don't really know what to choose from the options available for Paper 3. If only they put Technology in Paper 3 and not Paper 2 !

Since I have to choose one, I'd like to make my efforts count, and build up enough vocabulary to create a second specialisation for my career. Basically I don't want to study just to pass the exam. I want all that study to have a longer-term effect on my translation career.
So looking at the options of Paper 3, I'd think Law should be a good career choice, but I don't have a legal background. Between Science and Social Science, which has more potential with agencies?
Did anyone else have this problem?

Hi Pratik,
I have passed a couple of DipTrans modules so far for French to English.
It might depend how much experience you have but I'm not sure how much customers and agencies look at the specific modules taken.
I passed the Social Science paper. I have a background in Social Sciences since I studied the subject as part of my degree. This probably made it a bit easier for me but I still think that this one might be the "easiest" option. The past papers us... See more Hi Pratik,

I passed the Social Science paper. I have a background in Social Sciences since I studied the subject as part of my degree. This probably made it a bit easier for me but I still think that this one might be the "easiest" option. The past papers used to show the pass rates and they were often higher for Social Sciences, at least for French-English.
I didn't prepare for the Science paper but I found that the Technology paper can be quite tricky in exam conditions. A wide range of topics and vocabulary can come up and then you need to be able to deal with it using only dictionaries and glossaries on paper. Maybe this is a similar difficulty for the Science paper too. ▲ Collapse | | |
Thanks Jenny. I am going to choose science in the end because I feel more comfortable with that, although I agree that it can cover a wide variety of topics. | | | Jasmina Towers United Kingdom Local time: 21:55 Member (2000) Italia menyang Inggris
Hi, I passed the science paper (many years ago!!) with absolutely no knowledge of science. It really is SEMI specialised. Since then I've worked successfully on a whole host of translations which have been much more specialised (although of course I've been able to use the internet for research).
Good luck! | |

I chose Technology and Science for both my language pairs. I think it's a good idea to choose your subjects well beforehand so that you can prepare for those specific topics.
