I answered yes and said I'd contribute, but I wanted to qualify that: I think the book reviews should focus on dictionaries and other translation-related books (to maybe include language-training books as well). This was suggested in the forums a while back and I think it would be a great idea. I have a couple of expensive white elephants sitting on my shelves, dictionaries that I most likely wouldn't have bought if I'd had a chance to get feedback on them in advance from people who had actually... Amazon.com, for example, uses a star-rating system with customer reviews, and something that like would probably work in this case. ▲ Collapse | | | abufaraz Pakistan Local time: 22:08 English to Urdu + ... If this feature is introduced then, I'm afraid you will have to include the books from all the languages and on every topic. Regards

Amazon.com, for example, uses a star-rating system with customer reviews, and something that like would probably work in this case. I answered no, and I'd like to clarify that. I understood books to mean fiction in the poll. But I'm one of the people who have been hankering after a dictionary "blueboard" for years. And there's never been any response from up above. Before reading the comments, I immediately suggested a poll about a dictionary review section. Maybe it'll get posted, maybe there'll be some interest and just maybe we'll get a section that would be really useful. Because just like Cindy, I have some very expensive books gathering dust on my shelves. | | | dictonaries and translation-related books, too | May 12, 2006 |
I also chose to understand "book review" as translation-related books - the idea of a "dictionary blueboard" sounds really nice! It doesn't happen very often, but I already regretted buying a dictionary after seeing what was inside... OTOH, I have some wonderful dictionaries that were difficult to find, so it may help other people to know that they exist. I also have a couple of translation-related books and would be interested in discovering other documents. | | | relevant books | May 12, 2006 |
I haven't responded to the poll, because it's far too generic! I'm in complete agreement with the previous posters - should Proz have a non-translation related book review section? Absolutely not! Should it have a dictionary/translation-related book review section? Yes, it would be a very useful feature.

I would like to add that IF we were to get a dictionary review section, it would be useful to include dictionaries available on CD within the scope.
because I remember that Mihai has mentioned this before ( http://www.proz.com/post/296349 ). But I agree that the question shoud be more specific (translation-related books). Anyway, a great idea. I would sure contribute | | | Parrot Spain Local time: 19:08 Spanish to English + ...

agree Most people try not to buy such books by guesswork, but ask friends for recommendations, why not make it public. Ricki | | | Mihai Badea (X) Luxembourg English to Romanian + ... Dictionary/book review section | May 12, 2006 |
Thank you all for your answers and comments. I have suggested this poll a long time ago and if the staff chose to publish it now, it could mean that they consider the idea, which is great. I have suggested this poll a long time ago and if the staff chose to publish it now, it could mean that they consider the idea, which is great. Now, I guess, it’s up to us to convince them that we really need such a section. There were indeed very useful discussions on books and dictionaries in the fora, but the information is not very easy to find. I think I would like a more structured way of presenting our opinions on the dictionaries/books. I fully agree with the colleagues who said that this review section should focus on dictionaries and other translation-related books, but, on the other hand, I would also like to be able to find comments on specialized books. For instance, I specialize in financial translations and I would like to read and write reviews on books dealing with financial subjects. These books are not really translation-related, but the reviews would certainly help me as a translator.

I would like to know more about e-books on translation as it is less expensive and more convenient for me to download them.
