Swedish term

Plåt & Plattor

Swedish to English Tech/Engineering Metallurgy / Casting
A company refers fairly regularly to the fact that it offers various metals in various forms (think pipes, bars, sheets, etc) - and refers a couple of times to offering "Plåt, Plattor" - as two items. As far as I'm concerned they're one and the same thing. Am I missing something obvious here?

Discussion

George Hopkins Jun 5, 2013:
Plate ... is usually about three or more millimetres thicker than sheet. Ref. Collins.
Ian Giles (asker) Jun 5, 2013:
Just one question... ...why did they never teach me this in my GCSE in Resistant Materials?!
Deane Goltermann Jun 5, 2013:
Exactly, they both come in 'sheets', but 'pieces thicker than 6 mm (0.25 in) are considered plate.' This definition seems wide-spread.
Ian Giles (asker) Jun 5, 2013:
Sheet metal/metal plates Deane - looks plausible in context. Sheet metal is the really big thin stuff that comes in rolls, while metal plate is a bit thicker .... right?
(Last time I ever work on stuff about metal!)

Perhaps its is 'sheets of metal plate'. Either way these are different products or product classes.
