English to Spanish Medical Psychology psych eval interview ques
Still working on the same psych eval questionnaire for children/minors, from American English to US Spanish. This question is being asked of children of school age (could be anywhere from 5 or 6 to 18 yrs old), and it surprises me to discover it's something I don't even have an instinct about!

"At school, do you sometimes call out the answers before you are called on?"
"En la escuela, ¿a veces das las respuestas antes de que te pregunten?"

It's not that the student answers before the question is asked (which is what "antes de que te pregunten" sounds like to me), but that the teacher has asked a question of the class in general and students are expected to raise their hands and wait for the teacher to choose them before answering.

I'm considering elegir, indicar, señalar, but for some reason my brain wants to think there must be a particular verb for this in Spanish. Any suggestions?
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Rosmu

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Gracias, Robert. Esta es la respuesta que elegí para mi pregunta original pero también incluí la sugerencia de Juan en la frase (sueltas la respuesta)."

[antes de que se te lo] pida

... antes de que se te lo pregunte [a ti]...

I'd go with something simple like this.

el profesor te llame

In Argentina we say: la maestra/profesora te LLAMA. However, I am not sure this applies to other variants of Spanish, so you may want to google it before using it.

agree Robert Carter : En México, también. Saludos.

la suelta

Estoy de acuerdo con tu análisis. Por eso diría: "En la escuela algunas veces sueltas/dices la respuesta antes que todos sin que sea para ti la pregunta"
Note from asker:
Gracias, Juan, aunque no elegí tu respuesta, me era útil para refinar la frase en su totalidad.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Andy Watkinson : The Asker has made quite clear that this is NOT the context. Pls. read her explanation.
