"Those who is sexually active"

English to Japanese Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Clinical Trials: Inclusion Criteria "Those who is sexually active"
Hello!

I'm Noriko from Japan.

When the inclusion criteria defines "Those who is sexually active" in the clinical trial-related documents, in general, do they under how condition?

Also, I'd like to know when and why doctors or co-medicals ask "are you sexually active?".

Please let me hear your comments about that.

I agree with Shannon. This is a very neutral term. Doctors almost always ask you this when you have an appointment so they can tell if they should be concerned about STDs or pregnancy. It does reference your current level of sexual activity, not whether you have ever had sex or not. I believe you would be "sexually inactive" if you just didn't have a partner at that time.

I agree, Shannon. whether the person enjoys or hates sex doesn't matter in this case, which is clinical related issue. Being "sexually active" means that you have a sexual intercourse with someone/someones. Of course, teenager could be sexually active and even 80-years-old man can be. Sexually INACTIVE person has some kind of medical conditions such as ED or simply a virgin.

Actually, "sexually active" is a very neutral term that merely describes the current sexual activity level of the person in question. I suppose that you are right in the sense that most people who are sexually active also enjoy their sexual relationships, but it is perfectly possible for a sexually active individual to hate sex (just ask someone who is stuck in a loveless marriage or a young woman who is being sexually trafficked).

性生活を営んでいる方（人）

性的関係というと男女関係、人間関係のことばですが、医療関係ではそう
いう言葉よりもむしろこちらの言葉を使うと思います。

性行為に現役な人

解釈としては、sexually activeとは性行為が現役で、活発に行っている人のことに思えます。たまに世界中で60歳以上でsexually activeな人はアメリカで男性XX%、女性XX%、フランスで男性YY%、女性YY%・・・などと国別やもっとおおざっぱに言うと大陸別に統計を取ったりしているようです。ここでのactiveというのはずばり性行為に臨める人、つまり、その手の薬を借りても借りなくても行為そのものをできる人たちのことではないかと思います。

neutral Miyuki Ueno : 性的に現役であることとsexally active は必ず一致しない事もあるので、臨床現場での表現としてはちょっと不足な気がします。他のシチュエーションだといいですよね。ちょっと追記すると、「やろうと思えばできる」と「してる」じゃちょっと違いますという意味で。（下品だったらすみません！）

コメントありがとうございます。そうですね、医学は専門分野なので分りませんが、上の説明に書いたように解釈しました。個人的には非常に難しい訳だと思います。「下品」云々は気にしなくていいですよ。私も解説を入れる時に恥ずかしくなって投稿するのをやめようかと思ったくらいですから（笑）。

あるいは、「（現在）性的関係にある人」など。

要は、テストが実施される時点で性関係があるかないか、が結果やそれに付随するアドバイスの焦点になるわけですよね（？）。

上記のリンクは両方とも、オフィシャルなMedical documentsです。
両方ともSexually activeな者のことを「性交経験のある者」あるいは「性交経験を有する(者)」と言っていますので、そうした言い方が正式な訳なのでしょう。

Sexually activeという表現は、Discussionで皆さんもおっしゃっているとおり、Sexual intercourse(性交）のことを指します。特にMedical documentであれば、なおさらそうです。Askerの質問はMedical documentに関するものなので、性交に間違いありません。個人の意見云々の問題ではなくて、私は、オフィシャルなMedical documentのオフィシャルな翻訳について述べています。
