The company's pension plan is affecting overall earnings, because the company is having to basically pay salaries to retired workers.
(Of course, talking about the "earnings impact of pension" is about as stupid as talking about the "earnings impact of SG&A," and any director who does so should be fired, but unfortunately the worship of earnings numbers is a cult that has taken root in many US companies. (Cf. GM, Enron, Worldcom, etc., etc., etc.))
