Have you heard of "health savings accounts" (HSAs)? If not, you probably soon will. Authorized by the recent Medicare Act, they're the latest product in business health insurance. HSAs are part of a trend to give employees and the self-employed greater control over their medical expenses, with some tax advantages thrown in. Here's an overview of how these accounts work.

An HSA arrangement has two components. First, there's a high-deductible medical insurance plan. This is similar to a regular plan, except that the deductible must be at least $1,000 for single participants or $2,000 for a family. The idea is that the policy covers major medical costs, while the participant pays for smaller items. Because the deductible is high, the monthly insurance premiums should be lower than for other plans.

Health savings account deduction: A health savings account (HSA) is a medical coverage plan that works much like an IRA. Eligible participants put money into an HSA where it grows tax free and withdrawals can be made to pay medical, dental and vision care costs not covered under a corresponding high-deductible health care policy. These accounts became available to eligible taxpayers for the first time last year, and HSA holders can deduct (within IRS limits) their annual contributions; for 2004 tax purposes, that includes money contributed last year, as well as deposits to the account as late as this April 15. The maximum possible above-the-line HSA deduction on 2004 returns is $2,600 ($5,150 if the account is for family coverage). Fill out Form 8889 to determine the exact amount you can claim here.

neutral Ioanna Karamanou : HSA's and MSA's differ in structure but not on what they cover, contrary to your explanation. See your earlier provided link (HSA question). The use of Medical vs Health is used simply to distinguish the two plans, nothing more.

Το λες και στην τεκμηρίωσή σου: "Contributions to a health savings account (HSA) are tax deductible."
