خصم، تحمل أو خسارة مهدرة

مبلغ محدد يخصم من مبلغ التعويض، فإذا لم تتجاوزه قيمة الخسارة،لا يكون التعويض قائماً من الأساس، والغرض من الخصم أو التحمل أو الخسارة المهدرة هو تشجيع المؤمن له على تلافي الخسارة باعتبار أنه يشارك في تكاليفها بقيمة التحمل أو الخصم. ومن ناحية أخرى، يهدف التحمل إلى تقليل المصاريف الإدارية باستبعاد المطالبات الصغيرة التي تتطلب تسويتها جهداً إداريا لا يتناسب مع قيمتها.
كما يؤدي التحمل أو الخصم إلى تخفيض سعر التأمين، ويمكن أن يكون التحمل نسبة من مبلغ التأمين أو مبلغاً ثابتاً يستقطع من مطالبة المؤمن له. ويختلف هذا النوع من التحمل عن النسبة المستقطعة "Franchise".
