Spanish to English Social Sciences History Uriburu
Hola

took up .... as a/their (collective) battle standard/ battle cry

Two other options. I like "cry" better than "standard" if you have the freedom to play with the images a bit.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : I think this is a very good way to handle it; it catches the meaning and is also idiomatic. I don't think it's necessary or appropriate to strain in order to get "flag", "banner" or "standard" in there.

Thanks, Charles. It gets so long and clunky with the flag imagery.

waved its criticism of liberal democracy like a flag

metaphorically speaking
Peer comment(s):

agree Maya Conlon-Kremer : I think this option preserves both the meaning and the metaphor from the original text.

brandished fierce anti-liberalism

I feel 'brandish' suggests 'waving defiantly' so perhaps banner is not essential.
On the issue of 'democratic liberalism', even Wikipedia's definition slips into talking about 'liberal democrats' so am interested to know the difference.

whose leitmotif was a fierce attack on democratic liberalism

the bandera part is metaphorical so why not go for something that expresses it better in English without using flag or banner?
