Spanish term

alojamiento convencional

Spanish to English Marketing Tourism & Travel
Hi,

I'm currently translating an article for a tourism company. In the section of the document in question, the author is discussing the expected changes in the tourism industry in the next 10 years. I am having problems with the following phrase:

El aumento relativo de la demanda de alojamiento convencional

My original attempt was "The relative increase in the demand for conventional accomodation".

This didn't seem to make much sense in context though, and when I dug a little deeper, I found that sometimes "alojamiento convencional" can also mean "catered accomodation".

Any suggestions to solve my confusion?

Thanks

Darren

Carmen Schultz Jul 20, 2010:
Are you writing for UK audience or for U.S audience? Obviously knowing the audience is important as there could be preferred terms depending on the country. For example, in the U S, "lodging" is the preferred term to describe all types of places that provide accommodations (i,.e., hotels, motels, boarding house, etc.); lodging is an all-encompassing word and includes the concept of "accommodations" and all the facilities and amenities thereof...
Carmen Schultz Jul 20, 2010:
US Gov't Document RE: Fed Travel Regulation The US Government makes a distinction with regard to the various kinds of lodging (conventional& non-conventional lodging, etc.) See excerpt:
Per Federal Travel Regulation 301-11.12: How does the type of lodging I select affect my reimbursement? You will be reimbursed as follows:
(a) Conventional lodgings. (Hotel/motel, boarding house, etc.) You will be reimbursed the single occupancy rate.
(b) Government quarters. You will be reimbursed, as a lodging expense, the fee or service charge you pay for use of the quarters.
(c) Lodging with friend(s) or relative(s) (with or without charge). You may be reimbursed for additional costs your host incurs in accommodating you only if you are able to substantiate the costs and your agency determines these costs to be reasonable. You will not be reimbursed the cost of comparable conventional
lodging in the area or a flat “token” amount. (NOTE: Examples of additional costs are such things as electricity, water, natural gas. A house payment, cable bill, or other charges that would not change as a result of your stay would not be considered “additional costs.” Documentation reflecting additional charges during your stay is required.) ...
Pilar Díez Jul 19, 2010:
"Alojamiento convencional" means here "traditional", as opposed to "alternative". That is, it probably means hotel and self-catering accommodation.
Bubo Coroman (X) Jul 19, 2010:
I can imagine that the author might have written "alojamiento convencional" and then followed it with a short definition in brackets to clarify the meaning. You could do this in English, i.e. write "conventional accommodation" followed by a short definition in brackets. I am sure the author would not mind being asked to explain what he/she means by alojamiento convencional.
Christine Walsh Jul 18, 2010:
Haven't found anything that connects 'conventional' with 'catered', except for the fact that 'self-catered' could be considered 'not conventional' in a certain way.
suzie1107 Jul 18, 2010:
perhaps traditional accommodation? Alludes to the idea of catered accommodation...best of luck!
Noni Gilbert Riley Jul 18, 2010:
accomModation ;-)

Looking forward to that context in order to be able to venture more comment.
Evans (X) Jul 18, 2010:
please could you provide a bit more of the context you mention.

traditional accomodation (s)

I looked up synonyms for "convencional" and came up with: * arbitrario
* protocolario
* formulario
* tradicional
* clásico
* normal
The antonyms were " * nuevo * revolucionario http://www.elpais.com/diccionarios/sinonimos-antonimos/conve... So I would go with traditional vs. new, alternative, innovative, etc. here as it covers the modalities of the offer (pricing/packaging/services rendered, etc.) and the physical installations themselves (what people are accostumed to).

Saludos y gracias Pilar.
neutral liz askew : incorrect spelling of "accomModation"./The Spanish states "convencional"....so I am sticking to conventional.

So sorry for the typo, Liz. Is there anything wrong with traditional?
agree Carmen Schultz : I agree that the word needs to be used in plural for' lodging' context-- perhaps you can say "conventional" or standard "accommodations"-- for UK-- in US lodging is used a lot too. ; )

My contibution is British English and it is 100% correct. We don't use "accommodations" in the plural, and rarely use "lodging". The asker is based in the UK in any case. I fail to see what all the fuss is about here. The asker will eventually choose.

(e) Recreational vehicle (trailer/camper). You may be reimbursed for expenses (parking fees, fees for connection, use, and disconnection of utilities, electricity, gas, water and sewage, bath or shower fees, and dumping fees) which may be considered as a lodging cost.

Liz, I just happened to get an excerpt that had been used in that context but "Federal Travel Regulation 301-11.12:" relates to all travel not just for disaster stuff! Just google "Federal Travel Regulation 301-11.12:" and you will see
