I've given up almost all my teaching jobs except one: teaching Chinese at the German Chamber of Commerce in East Bavaria. It's not only well-paying, but also tax-free under 2100 Euro.
So it's worth the trouble.

I used to teach more than translate, but had three big problems: a) low pay, b) working at night which did not suit my wife and c) a lot of time wasted on buses - São Paulo is a big city and bus trips can take two or three hours. In the end I decided to concentrate on translation but have kept one student who is a personal friend and who pays in cash. I enjoy translation and have learnt a lot, the main problem now being massive taxes, as nearly all clients ask for a receipt. I work for two agen... In my case, teaching might have been the more obvious answer. When I was studying for my French degree there were two tracks: French Language and Literature and the French Teaching track. The teaching track provided internship opportunities and the teaching certificate that you would need to teach in high school. Even my professors were skeptical about any direct employment options with the Language and Literature track. Likewise, my other major, English Creative Writing, could have naturally le... See more In my case, teaching might have been the more obvious answer. When I was studying for my French degree there were two tracks: French Language and Literature and the French Teaching track. The teaching track provided internship opportunities and the teaching certificate that you would need to teach in high school. Even my professors were skeptical about any direct employment options with the Language and Literature track. Likewise, my other major, English Creative Writing, could have naturally led to the MFA (Master of Fine Arts) degree and the possibility of a career teaching English. Neither teaching option appealed to me and so I chose translation which, when combined with my careers before college, combined my two degrees nicely. ▲ Collapse

I was invited to be on the Adjunct Teaching Staff right after I graduated from university, and spent three happy years teaching second- and third-semester Spanish.
After I moved to Spain, I taught EFL at a couple of academies (I prefer to not remember the pay or the conditions) for a year, and then went to work teaching Spanish, British History, Modern International History and Child Care and Development at a small private British international school on the Costa del Sol.

I enjoyed my students very much, but the school administration was another story entirely and I am glad I was able to transition into translating, which I truly love.

I answered "No, but I'd like to" because I haven't done any serious teaching on a long-term basis.
Hover, I've done some informal teaching when it comes to helping people get started as a freelance translator (instruction on the use of CAT tools, terminology management, QA software, advice on system specifications and productivity software, tips on gaining clients, etc.) and enjoyed it a lot. I would like to do it in a more structure... See more I answered "No, but I'd like to" because I haven't done any serious teaching on a long-term basis.

I was a part-time lecturer for a total of 9 years and liked it for the most part. Teaching is a great learning experience too - you have to update and expand your knowledge all the time to be able to explain things and answer questions. And it is certainly enjoyable to be among young people. Of course, it doesn't pay that well... And there were other disadvantages in my case in terms of relations with other staff members.
