Is ideal, but paypal is second.
However, smaller agencies or outsourcers, especially those who are local, send me cheques. Paypal and bank transfer is best for payments from abroad or out of town. The only thing is Paypal's fees.
I am sure that someone posted a poll on this topic not too long ago!

Like Steven Capsuto's, my preference depends on the location of the client. If the client is in PR or the US, I prefer a check. No fees, my husband goes to the bank regularly anyway, and I have the advantage of gleaning contact info beyond what the client has given me--just in case! It's nice to not depend on just an email address. And the photocopies of the checks are easy to hand to my tax accountant.

Hi Steven,
Maybe I am misguided, but I have read that MB is not possible to use for MB-accounts in the USA? I had an account last year, only received one payment from France (I normally use PayPal from clients abroad and check for US-based). This year when logging in, there was a message, saying that I could not receive nor send money to/from my US MB-account!
Did you use it recently?

My all Indian clients send me a locally drawn cheque which does not cost anything. I just need to drop the cheque at any nearest ATM and job done. But most of my overseas clients pay me via Paypal. Although the fee is on the higher end, but I am managing through that. Fortunately, many of my overseas clients bear the paypal fee. But still I need to pay Paypal for the exchanging the currency into my local INR.

As I understand it, they needed time to bring themselves into compliance with some U.S. laws or regulations. You should be able to use it again now. When you log in, they will probably tell you that your account has been transferred to their American subsidiary.
If you receive money from outside the U.S, you now have to click on the "Moneybookers International" link after you log in to see/withdraw those funds.

I use several methods with no real preference. All are easy for me, and for my clients.
I receive checks from US clients, or direct bank transfers.
Paypal is also fine, fast, and reliable.
For European clients, I usually receive wire transfers (I take the charges off my taxes) and Paypal for smaller amounts.
I don't use Moneybookers, and no one has offered to pay me in cash.

the fewer cheques you have to bring to the bank in the winter- the better!! that's another reason to love Paypal or bank transfer. It's -14 outside today and windy!!!

Btw. am I the only one who associates wire transfer with Western Union etc. rather than with bank transfer?

Xoom gets my payment from Visa/MC/PayPal to my Brazilian bank account ovenight (sometimes on the same day) hassle-free. Bank transfers within Brazil are the fastest in the world. Meanwhile a foreign bank transfer will cost me some USD 80 in processing fees per transaction, regardless of the amount involved.

I am surprised that anyone uses Paypal!
They are so expensive and not customer friendly at all! Thanks to Proz I have learned about Xoom which is a good alternative to bank wire when there is a high bank fee (thank God, most of my clients are in the EU, which saves me that trouble)...
Moneybookers is acceptable but I avoid Paypal to such an extent that I do not even take on new clients who only pay through Paypal...

I agree, unless it's just a local transfer to my Brazilian bank account. Otherwise, the payments go into PayPal and then I transfer them from time to time into my USA bank account. That way, if I need to get the money down here I use Xoom and it costs me nothing.

I don't think PayPal's fees are so high, considering how convenient the service is, and I've also had very pleasant experiences with customer service on the phone. Once when I had a problem they were very helpful and friendly.

1) is for my domestic clients -- as this involves no transaction fee, plain and simple
2) and 3) are for overseas clients
4) is for overseas clients also but who do not use neither 2) nor 3)
I do not accept credit card.
