You're technically correct but sometimes what's correct and what's used widely do not coincide - that's why proz.com is so useful because English is not spoken in the same way universally.

I used "consists of making a reaction between a mixture...." As noted by others "consists in" and consists of" are both widely used but "of" much more than "in"."
