English term

main symptom or predominant symptom

English Medical Medical (general)
Is there any difference between "main symptom" and "predominant symptom"?

It is more preferable if explanation is given with definition of the terms and the references.

Thank you very much for your kind coorporation.

The contex and my understanding This question is from an abstract of a medical literature about the brainstem glioma in adults, in which histories of 48 adults were retrospectively reviewed. And then, the sentence that "The main presenting symptoms were gait disturbance (61%), headache (%)..." follows. Because it is an educational material, this is all information available.
After considering all answeres kindly given by answeres, I think "predominant symptom" and "main symptom" can by used synonymously, but "main presenting symptom" and "main symptom" may sometimes differ in the context. Unfortunately, it can not be judged in the case because of the limited information.

Background makes a difference You now quote from your text:
""The main presenting symptoms were gait disturbance...". So, we now know that there are serveral symptoms described as "main". It is possible that one of those might then be described as predominant, i.e. more important than/outweighing the other main symptoms. However, only you know the context.

Background of the question Thank you for your advice. As I am a teacher of English-Japanese translation in Japan, this question is from discussion of our educational material.
The contex is that in a medical literature about childhood brainstem gliomas, the word is used as follows.
"The main presenting symptoms were gait disturbance..."
However, I would rather to know the exact definition of both words for educational purpose. Although I search some English dictionaries, I can not find any differences or definitions of those words.

If you have any suggestion, it is very appreciated.

Context... Why don't you help us help you, by providing a couple of sentences showing the exact context in which the terms appear. Without appropriate examples of the use of the terms, all you are likely to get is a guess.
