In älterer Literatur findet man ihn oft auch unter der Bezeichnung * „Hyänenhund“ *, da er äußerlich entfernt einer Hyäne ähnelt. Gleich den Hyänen ist der Afrikanische Wildhund ein Rudeltier. Anders als bei den Hyänen pflanzt sich jedoch nur das dominante Paar innerhalb eines Rudels fort. Seine Nachkommen werden gemeinschaftlich im Rudel aufgezogen. Das Verbreitungsgebiet des Afrikanischen Wildhundes erstreckt sich über die gesamte afrikanische Savannenlandschaft, allerdings ist dieser Hund nirgendwo häufig. Die IUCN ordnet die Art als stark gefährdet ein.[1]
Merkmale
Der wissenschaftliche Name Lycaon pictus bedeutet so viel wie * „bunter Wolf“ * und bezieht sich auf die Farben des Fells. Die schwarze Grundfarbe ist am ganzen Körper mit braunen, rötlichen, gelben und weißen Flecken durchsetzt. Diese Fellzeichnung ist bei jedem Individuum anders, so dass keine zwei Wildhunde genau gleich aussehen. Das Fell besitzt keine Unterwolle, es ist kurz und manchmal so spärlich, dass an mehreren Stellen die nackte, schwarze Haut durchscheint.
Ein Afrikanischer Wildhund hat eine durchschnittliche Kopfrumpflänge von 90 cm, hinzu kommen 35 cm Schwanz. Die Schulterhöhe beträgt 70 cm, das Körpergewicht knapp 25 kg. Mit diesen Maßen steht er zwischen Schakalen und Wölfen. Wildhunde aus dem Süden Afrikas sind durchschnittlich größer als die aus den östlichen Teilen des Kontinents.
