Kan ik dit vertalen als: Drie FMD-cyclussen verminderden het lichaamsgewicht, buikomvang en de totale hoeveelheid lichaamsvet, ... ?

Dus: Trunk = buikomvang?

FMD staat hier voor een bepaald soort dieet dat een vastenperiode nabootst.

Het lijkt erop dat je 'body weight, trunk, and total body fat (...)' hier moet lezen als body weight, trunk fat and total body fat.

Strikt genomen is 'trunk fat' (rompvet, vet op de romp, vet (opgeslagen) ter hoogte van de romp) volgens mij niet hetzelfde als 'abdominal fat' (buikvet, vet op de buik, vet (opgeslagen) ter hoogte van de buik).

agree Barend van Zadelhoff : Yes, this weird habit of placing a comma in front of and/or in front of the last item in a list in English./I see it often used in cases where it is misplaced from our perspective. In this case, without 'fat', it may be misplaced in English as well

Thanks, Barend. The Oxford comma can be useful for disambiguating between different meanings but here it's simply misplaced (i.e. it ambiguates rather than disambiguates). More correct would have been: body weight, trunk fat, and total body fat.
