Était-ce pour les amener à Canossa qu’il demanda aux chefs des deux principaux départements de Peinture et de Sculpture d’être ses hôtes à Carinhall ?
Le prétexte était de choisir des œuvres d’art allemandes des- tinées aux compensations. Peut-être le Reichsmarschall n’avait-il que l’arrière-pensée de s’en faire des obligés par cette invitation et de se les concilier pour plus tard, autre moyen d’arriver à ses fins.
D’autre part, comment ne pas imaginer avec quelle orgueilleuse satisfaction il eût ouvert, à ces connaisseurs venus du Louvre, le musée dont il avait fait son propre décor !
I think it means something like "from which he accumulated his personal collection ( works of art)". But I was wondering if anyone can think of something a bit more colorful.
