Die heißen anders, weil sie etwas anderes sind. In der freien Wirtschaft sind die heutigen Leiter meist Gehaltsempfänger, während die Direktoren früher meist Eigentümer des Unternehmens waren.
Nö, es ist ein Fauxami, denn "director" ist eigentlich jeder, der Untergebene hat, selbst wenn es nur einer oder zwei sind. Bei uns in D kommt es nicht aus dem Englischen, sondern aus dem Lateinischen und findet sich schon im Brockhaus von 1904.

Das liegt nur daran, dass es in der freien Wirtschaft nicht mehr viele Direktoren gibt. Vor 50 Jahren gab es die noch häufig.
