German term

formal

German to English Medical Medical (general) Gastroenterology
Die Darmwände sind formal mit 2-3 mm etwas ödematös.

Does this mean more or less 'normal'. No hits for similar phrases from a web search so perhaps a typing mistake?

Discussion

Hannon (asker) Jan 21, 2019:
OK, I bend to your enthusiasm. Have entered with the gloss technically.
Anne Schulz Jan 20, 2019:
I beg to differ One of the best features of the KudoZ glossary is that it provides broad arrays of context-specific translation options for the same term, and the context is always very clear because the entire queries, answers and discussions are preserved.
philgoddard Jan 18, 2019:
But they're not normal.
Cenk Başaran Jan 18, 2019:
Most probably a typo The translation would be then "the intestinal walls are formal", and therefore totally nonsense. This must be "normal" as you've guessed.

Or you could say "technically, they are slightly edematous".

My dictionary reference says one meaning of "formal" is "äußerlich".
Note from asker:
Thanks for this answer, which provided the insight that this is an adverb! I think however it is too context-specific to warrant an entry in the Proz glossary.
Peer comment(s):

agree Anne Schulz : "technically" would be my interpretation as well (strange way to put it, though, something along the lines of "based on their form" cannot be ruled out)

Yes, I think that's the idea.
agree Björn Vrooman : Not a medical expert, but I agree with you and Anne; it's either "strenggenommen" (technically) or "dem Anschein nach" (look...). I think it's short for "nach formalen [zuvor aufgestellten] Kriterien."
