Payments received from customers should be banked immediately and allocated accurately to the customers’ accounts within one working day of receipt and to ensure that defaulted payments (e.g. payments refused by the bank) are identified and followed up immediately.
Customer remittances should be allocated against the specific invoices paid rather than ‘on account’, so that partly paid or overdue unpaid invoices can be easily identified. This will also reduce the volume of customer disputes as the XXX ledger will match the customers’ ledger.
