What is your suggestion for that phrase?

I think the equivalent مدرسه دبیرستان جامع is not very common in Persian. Would you please mention other equivalents expect than the fore-mentioned one?

Context:

When Mr. Thelen was a teacher at a comprehensive high school, he had some excellent experiences working with the guidance staff.

Yes. Exactly! I would do the same if I were you! ;)

Thanks for your attention I think it is better for me to use what you suggested and explain it in footnote that what a comprehensive high school exactly is. Do you agree with me?

Comprehensive high schools are the most common form of public high schools in the United States and are meant to serve the needs of all students, as compared to the common practice in other nations in which examinations are used to sort students into different high schools for different populations.

That is similar to our دبیرستان. I think no need to mention جامع.

"Some high schools specialize in University-preparatory school academic preparation, some in remedial instruction, and some in vocational instruction. A typical comprehensive high school offers more than one course of specialization in its program."

In our 'dabirestan', more than one course of specialization is offered.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_school#Iran

In Iran, "High school" is known in Persian as "Dabirestan". It takes 4 years, after the Middle school (Rahnamai). After the first year of high school, students choose their general branch (Mathematics and Physics, Experimental sciences, Social sciences, Arts, etc.).

There is also Technical high school (Fani va Herfehi) for boys and girls.

So I think 'comprehensive high school' is دبیرستان and specialized high school is فنی حرفه ای.

You are so welcome. :) Please note that Wikipedia says that:
Comprehensive high schools are the most common form of public high schools in the United States.

And دبیرستان is the most common one in Iran.

I see Zeynab's point. Well, her suggestion would fit in a text where the 'comprehensive high school' is the focus of attention. However, in the context you provided above, I don't see comprehensiveness so important.

Of course 'comprehensive high school' is more 'comprehensive' than a typical high school. As I argued above, in your context, I prefer mere دبیرستان better. But you decide on the right expression :)
Note from asker:
There should be some differences between high school and comprehensive high school, Shouldn't there?
Thanks again! But I disagree with you, you mentioned that "A typical comprehensive high school offers more than one course of specialization in its program" so when it offers more than one course of specialization, it means that it is more comprehensive than ordinary and vocational school. It means that these so-called comprehensive high school is a combination of vocational and ordinary school so I think "Dabirestan Jame" is much better equivalence. By ordinary school I mean those schools which offer these course: Mathematics and Physics, Experimental sciences, Social sciences. Anyway, Thank again! I should be obliged to you for this matter!!
Let me take a look that what is the nationality of the book author.
Would you please take a look at the links that Ms Zeynab Tajik has provided?
Finally, that's it!!! I found it. The following definition is adapted from Merriam-Webster website. It mentions that: "Comprehensive high schools offer both general academic courses and specialized commercial, trade, and technical subjects." By the above-mentioned definition seems that "دبیرستان جامع" is more logical than "دبیرستان ". It should be also noted that Merriam-Webster is more reliable than Wikipedia.
