I have googled "coverage purchase" and it just comes up with purchasing insurance coverage which I don't think is what is meant here.
My context is a description of Swiss case law and legislation relating to compensation owed to a buyer when the seller fails to provide the sold item within an alloted time period.
"contrairement à ce que le défendeur prétend, la cour cantonale n'a pas calculé le dommage sur la base de cette disposition; d'une part, elle n'a pas prise en compte un éventuel achat de couverture auquel le demandeur aurait procédé, d'autre part, elle ne s'est référé à un cour boursier...."
"cette disposition" refers to a provision in the Swiss Code of Obligations about civil sales

whereby the meaning is that (as in your context) if a seller fails to deliver a product on time, the buyer may be compelled to purchase it somewhere else (to cover his needs). If this is only possible at a higher price than the one quoted by the intended original seller, the latter will have to cover the difference.
