Russian term

связана с типом решаемой задачи

Russian to English Science Medical (general) neurology, neurophysiology, anatomy
This is a scientific paper on neurophysiology. It's really the whole sentence I'm having trouble with:

"Специфика во взаимодействии передних и задних отделов коры является столь же необходимым условием организации разных стратегий мышления, как и во взаимодействии двух полушарий и связана с типом решаемой задачи и индивидуальными особенностями в регуляции функциональной активности мозга."

Here's my translation, with annotations in brackets:

"The specific nature of the interaction of the anterior and posterior regions of the cortex is every bit as necessary for organizing different strategies of thought, as it is for [does this make sense?] interaction between the two hemispheres, and is associated with a type of solvable task [??] and with individual features that regulate the functional activity of the brain.[??]"

On the first queried part: It seems like it should say the interaction of anterior and posterior regions are necessary for thought, and so is the interaction between the two hemispheres. But I can't get this meaning from "как и во..."

Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Farida Vyachkileva Oct 28, 2009:
To my mind the original "Is associated with a task being solved" sounds better.
Rachel Douglas Oct 28, 2009:
во взаимодействии ... как и во взаимодейстии I believe that's the parallel, even if it's somewhat muddied by "столь же".

The specific nature of the interaction between the anterior and posterior regions of the cortex is just as necessary a condition for the organization of different strategies of thinking, as is [the specific nature of] the interaction of the two hemispheres, and it is related to the type of problem being processed and to individual distinctions in the regulation of brain function."

I don't like using "processed" for human brain functions, as you can imagine, but this author has earned it!
Susan Welsh (asker) Oct 28, 2009:
I'm going to post another Kudoz on this. Upon further reflection, I think that if my understanding of the first queried part ("как и ...") is correct, as Mikhail says it is, then the author has made a mistake, since it really doesn't make any sense. Better to separate that issue from the specific glossary question of this Kudoz.

and depends on the problem being solved

As simple as that. Решаемый means not only solvable, but also 'that being solved.'

You may substitute 'solved' for 'tackled' or a better alternative.

Susan, "столь же... как и" is very poor grammar - a mixture of grammatical structures - but your interpretation (is as necessary for ... as it is for ...) is correct.

Moreover, there's a comma missing after полушарий.
Note from asker:
Thanks, Mikhail, makes sense. Could you look at the first queried part too? I feel stupid putting up a Kudoz question for "как и," although I suppose I could if you prefer.
