Окончательное исследование и впрямь звучит странновато и непонятно, но это и не (не обязательно) специальное (теоретически до него могли быть и другие специальные исследования, посвященные тому же вопросу).
Пример от противного: в контексте упомянуты специальные исследования, не дающие, однако, окончательного ответа на искомый вопрос:

Смысл понятен, другое дело, что официального русского термина не встречал.
definitive study - a study that is generally agreed to provide the answer to a question with no room for doubt. The term ‘definitive’ is usually used to describe a study that has already been completed. The term confirmatory study is more often used of a study that it is planned to undertake.
