cuando la pequena ha dejado de asomarse de la ventana . dona clementina le progunto a su madre sobre la pequena .y le dice que la nina esta enferma con la fiebre de malta y le describe la situacion y dice: se conoce que algun dia debi dejarme la leche sin hervir ... sabe usted? tiene tanto que hacer! ya ve usted, ahora, en tanto se reponga ,he de privarme de los brazos de pascualin (es el hermano de la nina, quien tenia que cuidar la nina .pero el, en vez de esto sale a jugar en la calle)

"helping hand" retains the arm metaphor, although this isn't strictly necessary.
"Managing without" somehow seems to sound more of a physical hardship than "doing without", but of course, either is correct!
There are of course many ways to express "During her recovery", but I somehow doubt that this is the most important part of your question...

I seem to have missed the point, but "deprive of" may still make sense.
How is this; "Untill she is recovered, I have to be deprived of help (arms in figurative) by pascualin"
after he (la niña) is recovered, I have to deprive of the arms of pascualin.
