AMIGOS TODOS: QUIERO AGRADECER SU INTERS Y SU VALIOSA AYUDA, Y CONTARLES QUE ESA TRADUCCIN FUE UNA COSA RAPIDSIMA, QUE MI CLIENTE ESTABA ESPERANDO CON ANSIAS. LA RESPUESTA QUE GOODWORDS DIO EN SU SEGUNDA NOTA ME PARECI MUY ACERTADA, Y FUE LO QUE US: "I HAD IT BURNED OUT", SEGUIDA POR EL "AND THAT DID IT" DE RUTH HENDERSON.
NO ME ATREV A TRADUCIR "I HAD IT RADIATED", PORQUE RKURYLSKI MENCION LA CAUTERIZACIN, QUE ES OTRA MANERA DE QUEMAR, Y NO TENA CMO VERIFICAR EL PROCEDIMIENTO QUE HABAN USADO EN ESTA PERSONA.
DESPUS LLEG EL "ZAP" DE JANE LAMB-CLOTH, QUE ME PARECE ESTUPENDO, Y TODOS CONTRIBUYERON MUCHO A ENRIQUECER MIS CONOCIMIENTOS.
AHORA TENGO QUE ADJUDICAR LOS KUDOZ Y ESTOY COMPLICADA, PORQUE GOODWORDS NO DIO UNA RESPUESTA, APARTE DE SUS COMENTARIOS AQU.
POR LO TANTO, LES COMUNICO QUE PONDR TODAS SUS SUGERENCIAS EN EL GLOSARIO Y LE DAR LOS PUNTOS A JANE. ESPERO QUE NADIE SE SIENTA IGNORADO(A).

Why not just used "burned" as she did in Spanish? As you say, this leaves it open to be either radiation or cauterization. I'd venture that if she had been an English speaker, she might have said it that way.

OMG! RKurylski, I have no way to find out what method they used with this lady... Both radiation and cauterization imply burning. Should I use "nuked"? (this is a very informal letter from a friend of my client's)

my thyroid.....they zapped me and now everything's fine!

cheers....:)

Not nuking dear..that is a Bomb! This is Zapping...like with a Ray...it is colloquial....

Zapping works fine...the ya can mean that's good or bad. Depends on your context, right? it's either everything's fine..or "and that did it"

Hi Maria

I would just say: they zapped my thyroid and now everything's fine!

Zapping works because radiation is a "ray" right? ZApping means to change TV channels with a remote..going from one channel to the other. Also, in science fiction parlance and slang, it means to direct a ray at someone/something...so I think this would work fine in that register.

agree Carmen Schultz : did they zap you or the thyroid? Just an observation. The way you wrote it sounds as if you were being zapped and not the gland itself. I like your choice of zap. It's contemporary.

"I had my thyroid irradiated, and it did the trick!"

Actually, you can irradiate your thyroid as treatment, so I would say "I had my thyroid irradiated, and it did the trick!". The other treatment is surgery, but that wouldn't be the same as "quemarse la tiroides".

In English we would never say "I had it burned" in this situation. We might say, "I had it burned out/off", but it would not be common usage.
