Susha is a phonetic font I think.

But these days these fonts are all on the way out. The inscript keyboard based fonts like Mangal are now almost universally used.

If you an old font like Shusha you will face a number of issues - they cant be used for websites. Text in these fonts can't be easily changed to another font. You can't use TMs and CAT tools as these all unicode based.

CDAC-Pune has developed a whole series of fonts like DV-TTSurekh. These are available both in ttf form and as unicode fonts.

If you have used LEAP Office software of CDAC, you would be aware of these fonts.

The KrutiDev font family is again a very large groups of fonts with several versions. These are all typewriter based fonts, that is the keyboard layout of these fonts is similar to the standard Remington typewriter keyboard in Hindi.

These fonts cannot be converted to Mangal and other unicode fonts, though some good converters for doing this are available such as the TBIL Converter.

But I will advise you against using these old fonts as they are being phased out. Unicode-based fonts like Mangal, Kokila, Aparajita, Arial Unicode MS, etc. are the ones you should go for.

Phonetic writing tool Jul 28, 2013

Hi Tilakahuja,

you could try the BarahaIME, which is a program that allows you to write phonetically with an unicode font.
They have a proper editor but the IME can be used with all programs. And after a little while you get very used to the layout. k is क, K is ख and so on. Also it automatically transforms hai into है.

Until version 9 it was free but now it costs $20 after the free trial period.
It also works with Sanskrit, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, Oriya and Kannada

Maybe that's something for you, as Balasubramaniam pointed out: non-unicode fonts are being phased out.
