Well, I'm also retired - so not obviously and directly affected as far paid interpreting/translation is concerned.

But I still don't like a bit how AI is being used. Not only in language services.

Anyone imaging that 'I'm not affected by AI' is daydreaming.

You may not have to worry about your job any longer, but you may soon learn how 'unaffected' you are

-- when you call your bank for some urgent problem and all you can do is talk so some dumb bot giving you the runaround

-- or when lots of companies start communicating with you only by using some barely trained chatbots or AI agents

-- or when some government department makes a dog's dinner of your case thanks to force feeding AI on civil servants and then expects AI to help clearing the mess

-- or when you have to keep your cool with people whose 'own thinking' is limited to repeating what some free AI told them

-- you'll find easily more to add yourself, no need to look very hard around ...

However, I have to admit that I am getting increasingly tired of reading comments along the lines of “I’m retired, so I have nothing to fear from AI”, as if being unaffected by the current situation somehow makes one’s view more objective.
For those of us who are still working and trying to navigate an increasingly difficult market, these developments are not an abstract discussion. They affect our livelihoods, our professional identity and our future.

You are a bit late to the party. Several participants in this discussion, including me, are still earning a living with translation/post-editing/editing and are using AI to at least some extent. DeepL, for exemple, has become an LLM-based tool specialized in translation and has become an AI tool as such. Apart from that I also use AI extensively as a valued aid for interpretation of vague and unclear source texts and research.

That the OP is being criticized has nothing to do with fear of AI, but everything with her position as a non-translator with a translator's profile and her reasoning and confusing/contradictory communication.

I have been exploring AI for at least a year now. Fear and being objective don't exlude each other. It is not in my interest to dismiss AI just for being AI.

I agree. This week I will be translating a 6k project in conventional translation. Not only companies still want their documents post-edited, some of them still want it to be done in conventional translation.

AI has helped developers become more productive, but it has also eliminated many IT jobs.
In the translation industry, AI is helping translators, but it hasn't taken over the industry yet.
We shouldn't miss this opportunity.

That's preposterous. Of course they will change, generally speaking. Translation is no different from any other sector with a supply glut. Just have a look at this website, where 90% of the activity has evaporated over a few years (in terms of Kudoz questions and forum posts in my language combinations - I never looked much at the job listings).

Eventually supply and demand will rebalance us into new job descriptions. Some of us will still make a living doing something akin to old-style translation (in high-end niche markets where AI errors are expensive or dangerous), some will do a lot of MTPE (often boring work at bad rates), some will spend their time assessing AI slop HIT by grinding HIT, and some will find better things to do and leave the business. It's not the end of the world.

　　在影片中，龙餐馆的招牌上有一个很大的“龙”字，但是没有翻译成英文，餐馆的英文名是 Chinese Restaurant，和电影海报上一样。

　　但是英文字幕把“龙餐馆”全部译为 Loong Restaurant 了。外国角色说到“龙”时，发音和中文一样：“龙”，而不是“路恩”。（下面这张照片显示，餐馆的窗户玻璃上写的是 Loong Restaurant）。

　　片中男孩赛夫长大后重开的“龙餐馆”的招牌上的英文名是 Loong Restaurant，店内门帘和菜单上也这样写。

　　片中还把菜名“龙抬头”英译为 Loong Tide Top，发音接近“龙抬头”，字面含义是“龙潮之巅”。这种“音译”兼顾了跨文化翻译源宿两侧的文化，方便对方民众识别和记忆，并且产生了新的含义。外译中时这种做法很多，例如可口可乐、麦当劳、雷达等等，中译英有 Byejoe（白酒）。

　　实际上音译不仅能凸显文化特色，而且很有力量。影片中二十几个跟着男主角徐福逃出来的伊拉克小孩子齐声高喊“烩饭！烩饭！烩饭！”非常震撼，如果按照影片的英文译法，高喊“Rice Stew! Rice Stew! Rice Stew!”，就没有那味儿了。

　　所以，中国人在外国要大胆把自己经营的最具中国特色的东西向外国人音译其名称，每个人都这样做，积少成多，慢慢就把中国文化大量扩散出去了。

I think part of the problem is that many people use AI simply through a plugin in Trados or memoQ and expect good results immediately. In my experience, that is not enough.

Full disclosure: I'm retired. I'm no longer a working translator. I have nothing to fear from AI, so I can be objective.

I began working with ChatGPT when OpenAI first released it. I wasn't impressed at first, but I took the time to learn how to use it. The early versions produced translations much like those done by Google Translate of the time: wooden, error prone, and internally inconsistent. I soon discovered, however, that a properly designed, detailed prompt could yield translations of near professional quality.

Today, the frontier models no longer need a detailed prompt. They know how to do the job -- at least in the major languages for which ample training materials were available.

But here's the kicker. They aren't perfect. They do make mistakes. Human involvement is still going to be needed, and the best customers will realize this and engage human translators when accuracy is important.

However, much routine translation won't need human intervention. I don't have first-hand, current experience working in a company that does business on the international stage, but I'm willing to bet that much electronic correspondence can now be conducted in multiple languages without human intervention. Given proper guidelines, AI agents can handle routine correspondence in virtually any combination of languages.

I expect to get major pushback to this reply. But that's okay. I can take it.

Clients already use LLMs to pre-translate their texts, and then they are sent to us, to be post-edited. Many translation jobs have already been eliminated. Yes, a tool like yours can be really useful to clients to eliminate even more translation jobs. To us? I'm sure it can be useful for the few translators left, but other tools already exist. I guess it would depend on how good it is and on the pricing structure. I think you are targeting the wrong crowd here.

but you keep talking about using AI for "translation". Nobody "translates" anymore, we post-edit. It's not translation. We have been replaced as translators and turned into post-editors. We get to edit texts already translated with Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT etc. We don't need to use a LLM to support us because it's already been used. We just have to "fix" it. That's why a tool like yours is not very useful these days. I'm not fighting the machine. We have already lost the battle.

If you are not a writer, in fact so bad at it to the point of having to use AI to write for you, here are your words from another thread "So why can't AI help achieve human-like translation quality?" . How can you gauge this quality if you are not able to write your own posts, this is what your skills are with words? Are you in a position to explore this? Do you know what quality means in the written word? Or do you expect us to tell you this at the rate of $2/hour?

Of course you are a marketer, your survival as a software developer depends on creating a marketing hype for products that are solutions to non-problems. How else would your industry survive without selling products, mostly plagiarized products that you copy from each other, that nobody needs, for the most part? Or products that are already omni-present on the market? You just have no budget for online ads or YouTube ads, so you came here to teach us empty things. One software company creates a concept/product, then the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. just copy it. In writer's world, or artist world, or dancer's world, this type of things are severely condemned as people create their unique products, rather than copying from each other constantly.

IF someone is into filling "What ProZ.com translators are working on now", assuming that the posting is done in real time [immediately when a job is started or finished] would probably be a brave assumption. More likely there is a time lag of varying length, so the 'instant picture' might be misleading.

But Statistics 101 says: over say a week or two - or a month - the total should be fairly accurate for that period - assuming that there are no deliberate 'embellishments', of course.

Personally that 'feature' looks more like a throwback to some long abandoned web fads, like publishing online a webcam of your office (yes, THAT was once a big craze).

Actually your sentences sound very robotic, the pacing is too fast and unnatural (typical of AI), and the efficiency of your ideas expressed through an AI bot is not improved in any way, shape or form. Just because it's in the fifth gear at a high-speed pace, doesn't mean its quality or substance is in any way better. Say hi to your friend AI bot.

You are not a professional writer, you are a software developer (your words), yet you claim to be able to gauge and estimate the quality of AI-assisted translation in your introductory post. Isn't it contradictory? It'd be like me gauging the quality of a produced code. Girl, bye.

You should build your portfolio on sites like GitHub to showcase your skill. That is how many developers do and are encouraged to do. No one trusts someone emerging from nowhere, no CV, no known career path, just with an AI translation tool in a world where everybody can showcase an app with vibe coding. That is not serious.

Cost will always matter. That's exactly why I think translation companies should start experimenting with these tools now instead of waiting until a major tech company releases a public solution and completely changes the market.
