If the ambiguity is deliberate, I would first check what it is doing in the text. In literary or marketing copy it is often worth keeping, but in legal and commercial documents it is usually either a drafting flaw or a point the parties left open on purpose, and I would not resolve it silently. When the target language lets you keep both readings, I do that; when it does not, I choose the most likely reading and flag the issue to the client in a short translator's note or query. That keeps the decision with the person who actually knows the author's intent.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to share LinguaTrans, a macOS-native CAT tool I use every day. I'm a long-time macOS user, and finding a proper CAT app has always been a pain. I think this is worth your attention if you're tired of running Parallels or browser-based tools, and you want to free up some hardware resources.

Full disclosure: the developer is a friend, and I help test the app and suggest features. This has been my daily driver for three months.

LinguaTrans is written in Swift for Apple Silicon, opens in seconds, and uses ~300MB of RAM on my machine. It works with the files clients typically send: SDLXLIFF, memoQ, Phrase and GlobalLink-specific formats. Translation memory, termbases, concordance search, and QA checks are all built in too.

Its companion app, LinguaAI Toolkit, takes care of the prep work. It converts Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and subtitle files to XLF and back, unpacks and repacks Trados packages, and converts TMs and termbases. Together they cover the whole workflow without leaving your Mac.

To tell you the truth, I knew exactly what I was doing when I took the place of the baby Jesus in the crib.

I hopped over the low trellis and hid between Mary and Joseph. It was just before the sacristan bolted the heavy oak doors and banished the cold wet night. In the darkness, the red chancel lamp flickered and slow danced on the marble altar. I undressed and soon fell to sleep. I’d sleep on a clothesline, me.

I was found just after first light. The early faithful horrified to see a grown man sleeping half naked on the hard, straw strewn floor. Two big Guards swaddled me in a blanket and herded me away, kicking and screaming. At the station, I wouldn’t answer their questions so they belted me with wet towels. That’ll teach you a few home truths, the fatter of them said, over and over. I was flung into a cell for the night with two smack heads. Two sound lads, as thin as the greyhounds chasing the hare in Harold’s Cross. They’d been caught stealing bars of chocolate in Dunnes.

This morning after the breakfast we were all brought by paddy wagon to a special sitting of Dublin District Court. When it was my turn I told the judge straight out I wanted no solicitor and pleaded not guilty.

He’d to be forced out of the church. The people coming in for early Mass didn’t know where to look, your honour, the fat guard told the court.

The sacristan, parish priest and some of the parishioners were also called on to give evidence. The usual stuff. As much as we are sympathetic to the plight of the homeless, we do our bit, we’ve penny dinners, charity dos and soup runs, but this kind of carry on, upsetting good people just can’t be tolerated. Of course, “Things like this never happen around here” was thrown in for good measure.

I could tell from the get up of the judge that he had never seen a hard day in his life. He rolled the jowls of fat under his chin between his thumb and forefinger as he spoke. He told me that the charges of trespass were very serious ones and asked me if I had anything to say.

My hands were jelly. I grabbed on to the edge of the dock. As I did, I remembered something from the days when I was called to the training college. O’Brien the teaching practice instructor told us that if we were ever nervous speaking to a class, we should focus on the back of the room and pretend that you were speaking to just one person.

I began. I don’t drink nor smoke. I don’t take drugs. I’ve been sleeping out for over 12 years. I had a lovely wife and family and a good job as a primary teacher, but the truth is, I just couldn’t cope. The nerves were never great. I was in and out of the Gorman by the new time.

One day, I just left a note on the Formica kitchen table and walked away, like Matt Monro. I haven’t spoken a word to my wife or children since then, although I did see them the one time in town going in to Arnotts. I turned my head away, hoping they wouldn’t recognize me. That broke my heart for a long time, so it did. But I know they’re better off without me.

I was sleeping on the streets, until two nights ago. I know some good doorways and shop-windows. The odd time in the very cold weather, I might chance sleeping in a skip. In spite of things, I try to keep myself to myself and as clean as possible. I stay out of the hostels. There’s so much robbing and drugs you’d never get a night’s sleep.

Most mornings, I hide my sleeping bag and stuff and after having tea and a cut of bread over in Bow Street, I cross the river and head to the reading room in Pearse Street. For the newspapers and books.

On a good day, the walk takes about a half an hour, but I take my time. I have lots of it. They’re very kind to me in the library and leave me alone to read in peace. I read all the papers, even the English ones.

At best, I suppose, the people in Dublin town treat me as if I’m invisible. But, a few months ago I was sitting on the Beckett Bridge one evening during Snap Apple and a brat from the Southside – from one of them rugby schools, I’d say – tried to kick me in the neck. He’d have broken my neck if I hadn’t blocked his size 10 brogue. He lost his balance and landed on his backside. I’m not the first homeless man to be attacked like that, you know. You might have heard on the news about that young fellah whose rabbit was thrown into the Liffey.

I try to keep up with what’s going on in the world. That’s why I read the newspapers. I have a little transistor radio as well. I listen to it at night with my earphones to block out the noise and the mad thoughts that sometimes run around in my head. Some nights there are people ringing in to the talk shows and saying the homeless and refugees are all chancers and scum.

My hands steadied and I addressed the judge directly. I am sorry, your honour, if I have upset anyone. But I did what I did to make a stand. It was to bring attention to all of the empty houses in Dublin and Ireland. I did this to protest for the people sleeping in doorways, under bridges, in Lidl tents above in the Phoenix Park.

I did this to tell the journalists that homelessness is not just a Christmas thing. They drop in like parachutes to see us eat our charity Christmas dinner, once a year. We’re wheeled out on the television news with our bottles of stout and Cadbury’s Roses to make the rest of you feel good about yourselves on Christmas Night. Don’t even talk to me about those journalists who sleep out for a night on Grafton Street, once a year to see what it’s like. They’re nearly as bad as the posh schools sitting outside Brown Thomas in expensive sleeping bags singing Christmas carols rattling their buckets.

I did this to complain about the number of families living in hotel bedrooms. Families have to go in the back door of hotels. They’ve to stay hidden in their rooms. Children are embarrassed to tell their friends where they live. They can’t even have a birthday party. I did this to protest against all of the people being made live in those Direct Provision places. Eating food they aren’t used to. Sleeping eight to a room in dormitories with only a few euros a week. The big companies making huge profits out of misery.

Most of all, I did this to tell the politicians to stop making empty promises about the homeless. Last year, the Taoiseach said that it would be the last Christmas ever that anyone would have to sleep on the streets. Many of that shower in Leinster House are landlords themselves, of course, and don’t want to rock the boat. And you know, the worst thing about all of this is that it’s a problem that can be solved easily enough. I’ve never met a homeless man or woman who was looking for a palace. All they have ever asked for is somewhere small and safe where they can sleep for the night.

The judge raised his hand to interrupt me. Now, Mr Lloyd, I’ve heard enough. You will not use my court as if it’s Hyde Park Corner. While I sympathise with your situation, it’s obvious to me and to every good taxpaying citizen here in this court that you are not right in the head. These kinds of protests can’t be tolerated. This court must be seen to uphold the values of public decency. However, as you have not been in trouble before, I will try and be fair with you. I am sending you for psychiatric assessment before sentencing. Guards, take him down to the holding cell.

They brought me down and now I am waiting to be brought to the mad house for the once over.

I’ve no regrets. I am glad I did what I did and I hope it’s in all the newspapers tomorrow. It might do some good to hear about being homeless from someone who actually lives on the streets. We get enough of the over-fed college professors and social workers giving their opinions.

I know what lies ahead of me. More prodding and poking by doctors. There’ll be more nerve tablets for sure and maybe even the hot wire. And to be honest, I don’t really care if I am sent to prison. At least I’ll have a bed for a while. Prison or madhouse, I’ll soon be out on the streets. Back to hiding my sleeping bag and radio every morning and wandering between Bow and Pearse Street, just putting down time.

Je ne sais pas si mon google est paramétré de façon différente du tien.

Mais la première chose qui sort quand je tape "SFT Services" dans google, c'est le site de SFT Services lui-même, avec l'extrait sous le lien vers le site : "Organisme certifié Qualiopi, filiale de la SFT (....)".

Bon, donc c'est marqué : c'est une filiale de la SFT. Et c'est certifié Qualiopi (anciennement Datadock). C'est probablement l'une des grosses raisons pour la création d'un entité juridique différente : la certification pour pouvoir continuer à avoir une prise en charge des frais de formation.

À ma connaissance, si je me souviens bien, la SFT Services émane de la SFT.

C'est une histoire d'évolution des lois.

Pendant longtemps, me semble-t-il, les associations professionnelles pouvaient dispenser des formations et que ça soit pris en charge par la fif-pl (le fonds de financement de formation professionnelle des professions libérales).
Puis soit les règles ont changé, soit la sft a eu besoin d'avoir une comptabilité séparée pour le volet formations, soit c'est devenu un volume tel que c'était trop, je ne sais pas.
Toujours est-il qu'à un moment, s'est créé la SFT Services, entité juridique différente, et donc automatiquement, comptabilité différente et statut différent.

C'est peut-être au moment où il fallait passer Datadock ou Qualiopi. Des histoires comme ça.

From the post-editing side, the extra AI layers rarely replace a careful human read of the source against the target, because the typical problems are small shifts in meaning, terminology and register that look perfectly fluent. In legal and commercial texts a wrong term or a dropped qualifier can matter much more than an awkward sentence, so a single review pass by someone who knows the subject and the client's glossary tends to catch more than another automated check. I also find that consistency issues, such as the same term rendered differently across a document, are exactly what a stacked pipeline lets through and a reviewer working with a glossary and style guide picks up.

Your instinct that this is closer to spotted subtitling than plain transcription is spot on, Peter. Once a job requires timed segments instead of a running transcript, I quote it like spotting work and charge per minute of audio with a realistic turnaround, because otherwise the economics never work out. I'd also push the brief back to the agency so the deliverable is priced as time-annotated work, not ordinary transcription.

　　长期处于“翻译世界”的接受者位置，使许多译者形成了根深蒂固的迎合他者的思维定式，首先考虑的是他们能不能看懂，而非我们想表达什么。保留文化独特性被视为一种传播障碍，而归化或简化则被视作必要妥协，但这本质上却是主动放弃了对自己文化符号的命名权和阐释权。

　　当然，我们也要看到，文化自信的觉醒并非一蹴而就，也不是所有译者都已完成了这一转变。在当下的对外翻译与传播实践中，仍有不少译者沿用简化、归化甚至污名化的译名，依然以西方读者能否立刻理解为最高准则，把“约定俗成”奉为金科玉律。但同样值得关注的是，越来越多的中国译者已经开始觉醒，主动采用“新概念、新范畴、新表述”的策略来翻译与传播中国文化。从“龙”Loong到“饺子”jiaozi，从“悟空”Wukong到“西藏”Xizang —— 这些“新表达”的出现表明，中国文化外译沿用已久的译名惯例正在松动。中国知识界已不再满足于用西方现成的概念替换中国特有的符号，而是自觉还原中华文化的本真面貌。这正是文化自信在翻译实践中的具体落地，也是从“迎合他者”走向“文化传真”的生动例证。

VideoTextTeam, thank you. I really relate to all of that.

I have worked with captions and subtitles daily for years on the delivery side, so I have lived through the constant round-tripping, offset surprises, files that suddenly behave differently after conversion, and finding QC problems at the absolute worst possible moment. Honestly, those frustrations are a huge reason I decided to build ROQ in the first place.

A lot of ROQ is already being built around exactly what you mentioned: keeping original files safe, QC checks before export for things like CPS, characters per line, line count, and minimum and maximum duration, plus reviewing timing and placement against the actual video.

I have also been putting a lot of work into italics, screen placement, and making sure ROQ does not silently change or damage a source file just because it was opened and saved. Bulk timing shifts and stretch adjustments are also an area I want to make as practical as possible, because nobody should have to re-spot an entire file over a sync issue.

I am still hardening the build before I start sharing it more widely, but I would genuinely love to have someone with your experience test it when I open the first small beta group. This is exactly the kind of feedback I want.

Asjad, thank you as well. I really appreciate this perspective.

I know exactly what you mean about the part where the words are technically there, but you still end up spending forever nudging in and out times, fixing breaks, and trying to make dialogue feel natural. I have worked in captions and subtitles for years myself, and that kind of cleanup is one of the reasons I started building ROQ.

ROQ already has a Smart Split tool that is meant to help with that. It breaks a line into more readable segments and distributes timing based on readable text length, with QC there to help review the result. But I also want to be honest about where it is today: it is a useful starting point, not something I would claim can perfectly understand natural pauses, dialogue rhythm, or every language situation.

That is where I think more specialized AI assistance could eventually help. I am exploring future technology focused specifically on caption and subtitle work, with the goal of making smarter suggestions for timing, line breaks, synchronization, and placement without taking final control away from the editor.

I would love to have you try ROQ when I am ready for a small early tester group. Feedback from people doing this work every day is exactly what will make it better.

An update for this thread: every account now gets an email when it is signed in from a browser or device we haven't seen before, and when its password or login email changes, with a "This wasn't me" button to lock the account down. An update on the "first step" mentioned above: two-step login now covers every way of logging in (password, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn). Turning it on signs out your other sessions, and you can choose to remember a trusted browser for 30 days. To answer the question above: yes. Two-step login is available at [url removed] #two-step. With it on, logging in needs your password and a 6-digit code emailed to you. Every account also now gets an email when it is signed in from a browser or device we haven't seen before.

Following up on the multi-factor authentication discussion: two-step login (a 6-digit code emailed at every login, covering all login methods) is now available to everyone at [url removed] #two-step. Every account also now gets an email when it is signed in from a new browser or device, or when the password or login email changes. We kept two-step login optional for members, so those who want the extra step can turn it on.

It's valuable to hear from professionals who choose not to use CAT software, too. Understanding when existing tools are sufficient, or when CAT tools are not needed at all, is just as important as identifying unresolved problems.

I'm pretty sure you're right - although the explanation in the opening post is quite elaborate; even to the point of stating up-front that Proz staff had "permitted this inquiry in the technical forums" - something that staff member Ana has subsequently confirmed!
In the (continued) absence of any indication whatsoever as to the identity of the OP, or the business they represent, I've had a quick squint on the web in search of "kosuke kajimoto".
Our friend and (sometimes) trustworthy servant Google found a few potentially relevant 'hits' - amongst them a conference paper presented at an IEICE* event in Japan in 2023 entitled "Investigation of Technical Support Scams Targeting Japan"**, whose second author is identified as Kosuke Kajimoto of the Japan Cybercrime Control Center (JC3).
I can't help wondering if OP's underlying purpose in coming here to ask about something relatively trivial - our recent CAT acquisitions - isn't perhaps the vector of a probe into the cybersecurity measures in force on Proz.com.

Because I don't need it most of the time. And the new versions of all CAT tools are subscription based with a monthly fee, too expensive for my usage (may be 1 or 2 times for one season ie 3-4 months). So I may need to use a CAT tool less than 10 times in a year.
