Source text - English Leipzig war einst ein Zentrum des deutschen Musikalienhandels, zahlreiche Verlage und Hersteller hatten hier ihren Sitz. Diese herausgehobene Stellung fand ein jähes Ende mit dem Bombenangriff auf das Leipziger Graphische Viertel am 3./4. Dezember 1943 und dem Weggang bedeutender Verleger in die westlichen Besatzungszonen seit 1945. Durch die Kriegszerstörungen entstanden unwiederbringliche Verluste zuvor vorhandener Firmenüberlieferung. Diejenigen Unterlagen, die Krieg und Auslagerungen überdauert hatten, blieben zu einem großen Teil vor Ort. Die in die westlichen Besatzungszonen wechselnden Verleger konnten in der Regel nur einen kleinen Teil der Unterlagen, v. a. Verlagsverträge und wertvolle Autographen, mit sich nehmen. 1954 wurde das Staatsarchiv Leipzig gegründet; durch die Verstaatlichung vieler Wirtschaftsunternehmen und die archivrechtlichen Regelungen in der DDR wurde es auch für das Archivgut enteigneter und verstaatlichter Leipziger Verlage zuständig. So gelangte ab den 1960er Jahren immer wieder Archivgut von Leipziger Musikverlagen (v. a. über den VEB Deutscher Verlag für Musik) in das Staatsarchiv. Verstärkt ab den 1970er Jahren entstanden Findmittel zu den Beständen, zunächst als Findkarteien, später als maschinenschriftliche Findbücher. Auf dieser Grundlage waren die Bestände grundsätzlich der wissenschaftlichen Forschung zugänglich – aber die Hürden für eine Benutzung durch Forscher aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland waren hoch und die Bestände kaum bekannt.
Translation - German Leipzig was once the center of German music publishing, numerous publishers and printers were based here. This elevated position was brought to an abrupt close when the "Graphic Quarter" of Leipzig was bombed on December 3rd/4th 1943 and then again in the years following 1945, when many significant publishers left for the Western occupied zones. The war caused considerable losses to hitherto extant company records. Those records that had survived the war and not been removed, were, for the main part, to remain in situ. The publishers who moved to the Western occupied zones were generally able to take only a small part of their records, in particular publishing contracts and valuable manuscripts, with them. In 1954 the State Archive Leipzig was founded and, due to the nationalization of a number of commercial enterprises and the newly implemented archive laws in the GDR, it became the body responsible for the collections of nationalized and expropriated publishers in Leipzig. From the 1960s on, more and more records found their way from Leipzig music publishers (especially via the VEB Deutscher Verlag für Musik) into the state archive. The 1970s saw an increase in the production of finding aids, beginning with card catalogs, but later expanded to include typewritten inventories. On the basis of these, the archives were in principle available to scholars - but the obstacles facing researchers from the Federal Republic were high and little was known of the archive's contents.

Source text - German Der Choral ist eines der ältesten und langlebigsten Formen europäischer Kirchenmusik. Seinen Ursprung hat er in der Kodifizierung des liturgischen Gesangs im 7. Jahrhundert und in der damit einhergehenden Ausbildung eines musikalischen Repertoires, als eines Fundus, den spätere Komponisten immer wieder aufgreifen und schöpferisch umwandeln konnten. Damit steht der Choral in einem Spannungsfeld von Einfachheit und Komplexität, Offenheit und Geschlossenheit, Tradition und Innovation: die Wiederkehr der bekannten Formen und Melodien wird steht im Kontrast zu ihrer Einkleidung in stets wechselnde Kompostionsstile und -techniken.
Translation - English The chorale is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of European sacred musik. It has its origins in the 7th century codification of liturgical song and the ensuing formation of a musical repertoire, which later composers would draw upon and transform. As such, chorale has always been a dynamic form situated between the poles of simplicity and complexity, indetermination and closure, tradition and innovation: the constant return of established forms standing in contrast to their presentation in ever-changing compositional styles and techniques.

Source text - German Im September 1985 veröffentlichte das „Arts“-Magazine die Titelstory „The New Irascibles“ - „Die neuen Wilden“. Der Fotoessay von Kunstkritiker Robert Pincus-Witten und Fotograf Timothy Greenfield-Sanders nahm Bezug auf das Motiv „The Irascibles“ aus dem Jahr 1909 und porträtierte die zeitgenössische Künstler-, Galeristen- und Kritikerszene im New Yorker East Village. In tagebuchartigen Notizen über die Entstehung des Projekts zeichnete Pincus-Witten das Bild einer gleichsam boomenden wie zerrissenen Szene zwischen Idealismus und Kommerz, Aufbruch und Abgrenzung, Bürgerlichkeit und Avantgarde, während Greenfield-Sanders Gruppenfotos junger Talente und ihrer Protegés beisteuerte. Eine Bestandsaufnahme hätte die Geschichte werden können, ein Ausblick auf die Museumselite von morgen. Rückblickend ist sie aber vor allem das Dokument einer verschwindenden Subkultur.
Im Motiv „The Critics“ steht anstelle des Kurators Nicolas Moufarrege zum Beispiel das Lichtenstein-Gemälde „Drowning Girl“ als Platzhalter. Eine makabre Notlösung. Zum Zeitpunkt des Shootings lag der 37-Jährige Moufarrege nämlich mit einer Lungenentzündung im Bett, an der er drei Monate vor Erscheinen des Artikels starb. Das schreibt zumindest Pincus-Witten. In Wahrheit war Moufarreges Tod eine Folge von Aids. Jener Krankheit, die wenige Jahre später weitere „New Irascibles“ wie David Wojnarowicz, Luis Frangella oder den Kunsthändler Timothy Greathouse dahinraffte, die aber in den USA der Reagan-Ära kaum beim Namen genannt wurde. Zumindest nicht in den Medien.
Translation - English September 1985 saw the publication of the title story “The New Irascibles” in “Arts” magazine. This photo essay by art critic Robert Pincus-Witten and photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, referred to the motif “The Irascibles” from the year 1950, portraying the contemporary artistic and critical scene in New York’s East Village. In his notes on the project, Pincus-Witten depicts a booming but fractured scene situated between idealism and commercialism, awakening and dissociation, the bourgeois and the avant-garde, while Greenfield-Sanders contributed group portraits of talented young artists and their protégés.
The story might have become an artistic inventory of the times, a prediction of tomorrow’s creative elite. In retrospect, however, it is instead a record of a disappearing subculture. For example, in the motif “The Critics”, the place of curator Nicolas Moufarrege is taken by Lichtenstein’s painting “Drowning Girl” – a macabre stop-gap solution. For when the shooting took place, the 37 year old Moufarrege was lying in bed with the pneumonia that was to take his life - three months before the article was published. At least, that is how Pincus-Witten put it. The truth was that Moufarrege died as a result of AIDS, the disease that was to take the lives of other members of the “New Irascibles”: David Wojnarowicz, Luis Frangella and the art dealer Timothy Greathouse, only a few years later, a disease rarely mentioned by name in Reagan’s USA. At least not in the media.

Source text - German George Herbert Mead (1863–1931) unterrichtete nach seinem Bachelor-Abschluss 1883 kur-ze Zeit an einer Schule, wurde aber wegen seiner Art disziplinäre Probleme zu lösen, entlas-sen. 1887 bis 1891 studierte er Philosophie sowie Psychologie, Griechisch, Latein, Deutsch und Französisch an der Harvard Universität, danach Philosophie, Psychologie und National-ökonomie in Leipzig und Berlin (unter anderem bei Wilhelm Dilthey). Nach einigen Jahren, in denen er an der Universität von Michigan unterrichtete, holte ihn John Dewey 1894 als As-sistenz-Professor für Philosophie an die neu gegründete Universität von Chicago (Tröh-ler/Biesta 2008, S. 7 f.).
Die erst 2008 in deutscher Sprache veröffentlichte „Philosophie der Erziehung“ hat eine ei-gene, für die Lektüre wichtige Entstehungsgeschichte: Sie ist die Vorlesungsmitschrift einer Studentin, Juliet Hammond. Mead hat in den Jahren zwischen 1905 und 1911 insgesamt vier Mal an der University of Chicago eine Vorlesung zur Philosophie der Erziehung angeboten. Die Mitschrift entstand 1910/11. Der Text ist also nicht wirklich authentisch. Nach Meinung der Mead-Forscher Gert Biesta und Daniel Tröhler jedoch, die den Band zuerst in englischer, nun auch in deutscher Sprache herausgaben, „vermittelt uns die Vorlesung eine Theorie der Erziehung, die hochgradig mit denjenigen Ansichten übereinstimmt, die Mead in seinen an-deren Veröffentlichungen vertrat … Es [das Typoskript] enthält … eine Übersetzung von Meads allgemeineren Ansichten über den Ursprung der Bedeutung und des Bewusstseins in das Feld der Erziehung“ (Tröhler/Biesta 2008, S. 9 f.).
Translation - English George Herbert Mead (1863–1931) studied philosophy as well as psychology, Greek, Latin, German and French at Harvard University from 1887 to 1891 and then went on study philosophy, psychology and national economics in Leipzig and Berlin (with Wilhelm Wundt and Wilhelm Dilthey among others). After teaching at the University of Michigan for several years, he was invited to teach as assistant professor of philosophy at the newly founded University of Chicago by John Dewey in 1894 (Tröhler/Biesta 2008, 1).
His “Philosophy of Education” was not published until 2008. The book’s genesis is important to its understanding: it is a collection of lecture notes by one of his students, Juliet Hammond. Between the years of 1905 and 1911, Mead held a lecture on the philosophy of education four times at the University of Chicago. The lecture notes were taken in 1910/1911. The text is therefore not entirely authentic. However, according to the Mead scholars Gert Biesta and Daniel Tröhler, who edited this text first in an English language and now in a German version, “the lectures do provide a theory of education that is highly consistent with the views Mead espoused in his other publications … We could say, therefore, that the lectures contain a ‘translation‘ of Mead’s more general ideas about the social origin of meaning and reflective consciousness into the field of education“ (Tröhler/Biesta 2008, 3-4).

Source text - English In rehabilitating the productive role of spectacle in the history of computational development, I am taking a cue from media historians such as Tom Gunning and Anne Friedberg, who have demonstrated how spectacular moving-image cultures of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-centuries cultivated skeptical and scientific ways of looking at the world. I am also drawing on research from scholars of STS including Simon Schaffer, Jessica Riskin, and Mario Biagioli, who have shown the crucial role that public demonstration, entertainment, and the exhibition of theatrical wonders played in securing scientific authority during the early modern period. Bringing these two bodies of research into dialogue casts light on how scientific and popular knowledge engage and modify one another—giving rise to hybrid technologies such as the consumer computer.
Translation - German Wenn ich mich für eine Neubewertung der produktiven Rolle solcher technischer Spektakel ausspreche, folge ich darin Medienhistorikern wie beispielsweise Tom Gunnig und Anne Friedberg, die gezeigt haben, wie im achtzehnten und neunzehnten Jahrhundert spektakuläre Kulturen bewegter Bilder zur Weiterentwicklung skeptischer und wissenschaftlicher Weltanschauungen beitrugen. Außerdem beziehe ich mich auf Ergebnisse der STS-Forschung, auf Simon Schaffer, Jessica Riskin und Mario Biagioli, die gezeigt haben, welche entscheidende Rolle in der frühen Moderne öffentliche Vorführungen, Unterhaltungsveranstaltungen und theatrale Spektakel für die Herausbildung und Absicherung wissenschaftliche Autorität spielten. Der Dialog zwischen diesen beiden Forschungsrichtungen wirft ein Licht darauf, wie wissenschaftliches und populäres Wissen ineinander greifen, sich gegenseitig modifizieren und dabei neue Hybridtechnologien, wie zum Beispiel den Privatcomputer, hervorrufen.
