Hungarian to English: „A magyar parasztság a csillagos ég alatt” Kis-Tóth Ferenc kiállítása (VLS Pinceműhely, Szentendre, 2103. június 29 – július 14.)
A városhoz közeli kunszállási tanyavilágában éltünk.
A távoli összevont 1–8. osztályos tanyasi iskolában tanultunk.
Az erőszakos kolhozosítás elől a Bajához közeli Garára költöztünk – persze ott is téeszvilág lett.
Apám éhbérért robotolt, elég szegényesen éldegéltünk, ennek ellenére nagyon szép gyerekkorom volt ott is.
Garáról négy év után elköltöztünk a Kiskunfélegyháza közelében lévő Petőfiszállás tanyavilágába.
A nyolcadikat ott jártam ki.
1964-ben Pestre kerültem a Madách Imre Gimnáziumba.
Esténként a hajógyári rajzszakkörbe jártam Szentgyörgyi Jókához [Józsefhez], a Vasasban pedig atletizáltam.
1976-ban felvettek a Képzőművészeti Főiskolára.
1996-ban visszakerültem tanársegédnek a Képzőművészeti Egyetemre. Jelenleg is itt tanítok a murális műhelyben.
A klasszikus freskó, szekkó és mozaik mellett különböző anyagokkal kísérletezünk. (…)
1996-ban elváltam, azóta második feleségemmel egy szabadszállási tanyán élünk.
Apám kovácsműhelye és a magyar parasztság élete meghatározta érzéseimet, gondolataimat.
A munkaközpontú értékrendszeremet nekik köszönhetem.
Gyerekfejjel átéltem a tudatos tönkretételüket.
Kifosztásuk a »rendszerváltástól« napjainkig folytatódik.
Munkáimmal (nekik is) emléket állítok.
Segítek, ahogy tudok…”
Jellegzetesen közép-kelet-európai művészsors és szemlélet ez – mondhatnánk.
Zamatosan, jól körvonalazhatóan egyéni, és mégsem rokontalan jelenség a hazai legújabb kori művészettörténet színpadán, hiszen olyan alkotók más és más megjelenésű forrásvidékei és végkifejletei kapcsolhatók ide, mint például Bukta Imréé, Birkás Istváné vagy Kovács Lászlóé.
Tehát homok és vas; vakolt matériák és térkulissza-labirintusok! – egyszerűsíthetnénk le a máig tartó és jövőbe illeszkedő Kis-Tóth Ferenc-i művészeti ethoszt.
A hagyományos pigmentek – olaj, akril, akvarell, tempera, tinta stb. – nem eléggé megfoghatók, túlságosan „csúszósak”, „sikamlósak”, „szökni próbálók”, ellenőrizhetetlenek számukra.
Ezért a festészetet félig-meddig a szobrászi munkához teszik hasonlatossá.
Másrészt a rendszeresen visszatérő táj és évszakok témájú képein hihetetlen érzékiséggel jön át a természet élőanyag-szerűsége; a latyaknak, sárnak, hónak, homoknak, fűnek, virágnak, fának, égnek empirikusan megtapasztalt, nedvektől duzzadó színszervessége.

Hungarian Farmers under the Starry Sky
An exhibition by Ferenc Kis-Tóth
(In Szentendre at VLS Workshop Cellar
29 June – 14 July 2013)
When it comes to Ferenc Kis-Tóth - first of all and above all- our starting point in both the micro- and the macrocosmic sense should be topography. Let’s start by describing his surroundings.
His grassy farmstead in the vicinity of Szabadszállás is a live ethnographic museum, the jam-packed alluvium of outspoken and associative ie improvised raw art of creative and fast building instinct which expands mostly horizontally, sentimentality and transience, resistance and respect of traditions, passionate refuse collecting and temporariness of ‘homelessness’ and hard-work of creating cosy housing.
It is a collage of wizardry and enchantment beyond modernity.
Anybody in doubt may ascertain if one takes the trouble to visit his habitat among the dunes.
In order to see how Ferenc Kis-Tóth found the vital focus of his art and to get familiar with his milieu, it is worth quoting a couple of snippets from his cv of credo.
„I was born in Kiskunfélegyháza on 14 June 1949.
We lived in the boondocks of Kunszállás not far from town.
My father was a blacksmith in the boonies and my grandparents on both sides were farmers.
My brother and I often helped our father around the forge in rimming (putting iron bands around wheels), operating the bellows, fetching coal and wood and handing tools to him.
We tried to shape hot metal.
I still feel the smell of burning wood and hooves.
We accompanied our grandparents to the fields, we looked after grazing animals, we were responsible for fresh water during the harvest season, we helped carrying sheafs and were busy around the threshing machine.
We attended the remote school of the boondocks where pupils from standard 1 to standard 8 studied in the same classroom.
We moved to Gara near Baja since we had been forced to join the Co-operative in Kunszállás – but soon co-operatives cropped up even there.
We could barely survive on the pittance my father earned. In spite of the poor conditions, I had a lovely childhood in Gara as well.
After 4 years we moved to yet another boondocks – Petőfiszállás near Kiskunfélegyháza.
I finished year 8 there.
In 1964 I started my secondary school at Imre Madách Grammar School in Pest.
After matriculation I was trying to find light at the end of the tunnel and worked in several workshops.
I was a factory hand, quayside worker, haulier, porter at a market, machine operator, spotlight operator in a theatre. (....)
In the evenings I tried to learn drawing under the guidance of Jóka (Joseph) Szentgyörgyi at the shipyard and joined the Vasas Athletics Club.
In 1976 I was admitted to the Collage of Fine Arts.
Painter Lajos Sváby taught my class and I had a solid foundation in figurative art.
I loved anatomy.
At night I stoked a coal furnace in a factory and did casual work at several places to keep us going.
In the third year I already discovered the importance of various substances in painting.
I used soil, sand, powdered paint and iron to make my paintings – I found my way back to the materials of the forge and the boondocks.
After finishing college I also worked with restorers to earn a living.
In 1996 I became an assistant lecturer at the University of Fine Arts (the former College of Fine Arts). I am still there teaching mural painting.
Apart from classic frescoes, seccos and mosaics we experiment with various materials. (...)
I was divorced in 1996 and since then I have been living with my second wife at the boondocks in the vicinity of Szabadszállás.
My father’s smithy and the life of the Hungarian peasantry dominate my feelings and thoughts.
I owe the value of hard work to them.
As a child I experienced their deliberate ruination.
Their deprivation has not been stopped by the "new political system".
My work is a memento mori of their lives as well.
I try to help in my own selective way........”
This is a typical Central and Eastern European destiny and approach of an artist – one could say.
Though his succulent touch of art is individual, he is not alone on the stage of current national history of art. Imre Bukta, István Birkás and László Kovács originate from different quarters and their art differs but they all contribute to the same trend.
Sand and iron; rendering of various substances and labyrinths in the wings of space! – one could sum up the ethos of Ferenc Kis-Tóth’s art. It has been valid in the last thirty-odd years and it is going to hold good in the future to come.
Basically these 2 substances and the experience of space and life in both the city and the boondocks thicken the plot of Ferenc Kis-Tóth’s oeuvre.
The real invention of the creator was not Matter Painting (raised relief-like structure of a painting and the application of paint to the canvas in a paste form in various layers) or Haute Pâte (French), which he has been performing since the end of the 70s in his panel pictures. He has both Western European and Hungarian predecessors. His real novelty is the matter paintings of 200x100 cm size labyrinths which can be assembled and disassembled, viewed from both sides, applying tracery and functioning as display panels made from dollops of coloured sand.
However we look at it, there are artists who only feel secure if they can tackle both the physical and mental challenges of the substances.
The traditional pigments – oil, acrylics, watercolours, temperas, inks etc – are not easy to grab for them, they are too „slippery”, „immodest”, „always ready to escape”, they cannot be controlled.
That’s why they are attracted to statuary to some extent.
They transform their vehicle into a relief-like substance which can be shaped, spread, moulded, etched and coloured.
The geographical, the biological and the built environment gives them inspirational ideas to do so.
The cultivated fields seen from above, multiple ruts left by wheels in mud and melting snow or the various layers and textures of soil when digging a ditch, an adobe wall strengthened by reeds, crumbling plaster uncovering "the muscles and the skeleton" are phenomena par excellence for a painter as they are plastic prints of time and era.
But there was still need for an adhesive which was easy and fast to be applied. Various solutions were offered to restorers, builders and artists by the light industry.
These substances infiltrated into fine arts in the 70s.
Ferenc Kis-Tóth elaborated his plaster technique in this period with the help of plextol which turned the neutral sand into a substance of high plasticity and paint powder which his painter’s instict demanded.
He applied the colourful substance on fibreboards then on the steel wire of spring beds or similar wires with discretionary density attached to special frames made for this purpose.
(At the beginning of the 80s he also used angle wires of T or L shapes, steel-wool and wire as the only means of artistic expression.)
The focus of his interest emerged at an early stage.
Inevitably he was touched by dilapidated, weather beaten, shabby, dingy, scuffed, shrapnel ruined, bullet torn walls of sedimentary signs in Budapest along with corridors and yards covered in bits and pieces of old posters, windows of cellars at dawn, enamelled gates and front doors dressed in peeling layers of paint evoking memories of peacetime.
The great themes and characters of literature, history, mythology and public life along with the mundane matters of ordinary life with its outstanding and nameless heros and victims in abstract, semi-abstract and emblematic forms feel at home in his art right from the beginning. Though his art is not figurative his works always imply close connection to reality.
His sensitivity about social issues turned the historic symbols, signs, icons, physical phenomena, impressions, ethnographic and anthropological objects and decorative art into morality right from the start.
The memory of the martyrs of Arad, the status quo of the Treaty of Trianon, the sins of dictatorships and the previous system, the revolution and war of independence of 1956 and the retaliation period, Transylvania and the survival of ethnic Hungarians in the territories allocated to the neighbouring countries, "the Collaborators’ Rd", "the sins of civilization in the Iraq War", "the Xmas of Homeless", the Red Mud Catastrophe, the memory of respectable and hard-working ancestors, predecessors and colleagues has been building a metaphorical and historical labyrinth.
A labyrinth of matching, equal, transparent, double sided elements forming a net of political, cultural, social, historical, artistic, ethnographic, scenic and topographical diagnosis of both mundane and abstract ie emblematic levels.
This ever growing labyrinth is Ferenc Kis-Tóth’s own metaphor, a personal answer to questions of LIFE and ART.
A labyrinth with mazes of corridors where the wanderer often needs to change direction in search of truth. He needs to substitute time-worn notions and is forced to make a judgement once in a while. Don’t be misled by some smaller panels of his placed in gallery surrounding – they are within the labyrinth to make it even more difficult to find the way out.
"Nature has influenced my work since we have been living in the boondocks for 14 years and I spent most of my childhood there as well.
For a short time I returned to figurative art first of all to recharge myself but simultaneously abstraction is getting rekindled again and again" – he wrote in 2008 in one of his applications for some grant.
We also have to mention his colours and his utilization of metals.
The colours of Kis-Tóth’s "fine plaster " and "fleshy" colour combinations and layers – similarly to ornaments of folklore – are very strong, daring, fresh, fiery though matt, rich and alight, at the same time they are able to convey the subtle nuances of meaning.
On the one hand one could say his colours are symbolic, externalizing, emotional and completely individual.
On the other hand in his regularly recurring landscapes and seasons themes the palpable sense of life is evident in the organic colours of the empirically experienced slush, mud, snow, sand, grass, flowers, trees and sky.
In his latest relieflike pieces of art the spade, the hoe, the scythe, the plough, the wheelbarrow, the bucket, the mug and the other articles for personal use along with the rest of the tools commemorate his farming ancestors, the schools in the boondocks and his long gone blacksmith father. They are not lost properties but consistently personally elaborated new metal elements of his art.
In Kis-Tóth’s lyrical realism and precise materialization of naturalism metal is not just iron, but aluminium and zinc which all figure high in rural small scale agro-industry invoking household utensils. They become emblems in their outstretched flat forms against the colourful plaster background, their transformations are sacred abstractions.
In his other works these emblematic tools – sometimes several of them – emerge from the level of metal sheets like a relief carving in air.
In these situations the artist’s natural tool to change the surface of metal is the rust, the rain, the Sun, the grindstone, various substances to bring about patina or to engrave and yet again sometimes the coloured plaster which is good to create patches or plastic motifs of decoration on these metal surfaces.
"Hungarian Farmers under the Starry Sky" – says the headline which is an ironic, deferred, bitter, but deep-rooted truth of experience in both the natural and the social context. It is the clue of the exhibition.
And indeed we just have to read the titles of the paintings and pieces of art to complete the tragic, sad and rugged history of rural life of the last 60-70 years in Hungary, which is honoured by the artist with this unconventional exhibition.
The ethos of Ferenc Kis-Tóth’s art and its aesthetic appearance are each and both weighty, watchfully pithy, constantly up to par, his consistency is substantiated, he pushed the envelope of vital questions both at national and global level, evoking dramatic, joyful and cathartic moments, when beauty and morality fuse in a passionate modernity.
Or we might as well say that Ferenc Kis-Tóth’s rough, outspoken conveyances are so apt, important, crucial and revealing that they are beautiful, good and useful from aesthetic, ethical and social point of view since telling the truth makes our soul free.

Lengeteg, soványka a harmadik.
A negyedik igazi szépség. Vagyis hogy inkább ráillik, hogy bomba jó nő. Ringó csípővel jár, mórikálja magát. Szeret inni, enni, táncolni. Rángat bárba, mulatóba. A kocsmát se veti meg. De sohasem részeg. Gyöngyöző nagyokat kacag a szenesemberek között. Tele van szeretettel. A szenesemberek vele mosolyognak.
Ledér a hatodik.
A hetedik mindig feketében jár. Sohasem láttam mosolyogni. Mindig befelé figyel, a lelkemmel foglalkozik.
A csontos vállút úgy hívják, Hétfő, a mosolygóst Keddnek, a lengeteg a Szerda, a buja a Csütörtök, az attikai a Péntek, a ledér a Szombat. A sosem mosolygó, az a Vasárnap.
Hej, ha egyszer ők csalnak meg engem!

She is never ever satisfied with whatever I do she makes me work and she keeps threatening that I won’t make it.
.
The second one is tiny and round, she wants to have a lot of kids and she smiles whenever she can.
She has a beautiful voice and she can and does sing a lot.
.
The third one is light as a feather
and she is full of glamour.
She would love to have a beautiful life.
She has never ever lied.
She also encourages me to tell the truth.
She says it is too easy to keep to the honest side if you never ever talk.
.
The 4th one is a real beauty.
She swings and she aims to attract attention.
She loves drinking, eating and dancing.
She lugs me to bars and nightclubs.
She does not mind pubs.
But she is never drunk.
She gurgles happily among blue collars.
She is full of love.
Labourers smile together with her.
.
The fifth one is quiet and hardworking with black hair.
She keeps everything tidy around me. She hopes next time when she comes I will be neat without unkempt hair and my shoes will shine.
She is undeterred.
She is a sad widow from ancient Attica with thick eyebrows.
.
Wanton is the 6th one.
All she wants is travelling, lying and dancing around.
In and out of movies.
But she also loves birds.
When trees are in blossom she spends hours sitting around in the garden.
She encourages me to absorb all the light.
She wants me to fly around touching the ground only with my tiptoes.
.
The seventh always wears black.
I have never seen her smile.
She is introverted keen only on my soul.
She protects and teaches me.
She persuades me to love them – all my seven lovers.
.
But I cheat on them all.
I don’t work for the first one,
I don’t smile together with the second,
I lie to the third one,
I get drunk when I am with the fourth,
the fifth one always finds me untidy,
the sixth one cannot get me to love flowers and the seventh asks me in vain to love them all.
The one with the bony shoulder is called Monday, the smiling one Tuesday, the light glamorous Wednesday,
the erotic Thursday, the Attican Friday, Jezebel Saturday.
The one that never smiles is Sunday.
What if they cheat on me one day?!
